In honor of your 40th birthday I'm going to go a year without giving you advice of any kind. Or at least give it the old new year's resolution try.

I know I'm enough of a fuck up that it is hard not to try to give me advice, so I appreciate the monumental task you've set for yourself here. Thanks.

It's not that -- from my perspective it's mostly that you don't want it, to the point where you actively ask people not to give it, so I figured I'd just give you a break from the unwelcome attempts at trying to fix things.

My attempts at humor lately all come out dark.

Too often I don't understand the advice given and I then spend too much energy trying to contextualize and understand it, which gets bogged down into "I'm interpreting it like this and I can't do that because of this" which creates a lengthy back and forth which only increases my frustration and feelings of inferiority.

It's not that I don't appreciate the advice or the care and concern that is behind it. Mostly I'm looking for outside assurance that I'm not crazy or outside verification that I am. Sometimes just a pat on the back and a statement that everything will be okay.
