Ohhh Port Authority. Honestly, it's very populated as it's a maaajor terminal, and so there will be, uh, quite a number of sketchy characters around. But as long as you look like you know where you're going and don't let anyone stop you, it should be all right. I do recommend going with a friend, though, especially if you're not very familiar with the area.

Also be aware that Port Authority is quite HUGE. Be sure to check in advance where exactly which gate your bus will be leaving.

Port Authority is just as safe as any other part of the city that late at night. Definitely be alert and aware, but it's not like you're in any more danger. And exhibit isn't that far away from Port Authority, I passed by it the other day, so it shouldn't be that much of a big deal when you'll be walking such a short distance anyway.

And that part of the city something is always going on and it's the Times Square area, so there is God knows how many lights on as well.

If anything, if you feel uncomfortable just stay inside the station, and wait out your time until your bus in the ticketing section, and if any of the food places are open you can just sit in there as well too.
