LUMOS SORTING APPLICATION

Name:Li

Age (13 or up; we stick to LJ rules): Almost 15!

Location: Is it okay if I don't say? Sorry, I get freaked out about giving away stuff like that...

Where did you hear about this community? (Please tell us which
lj user recommended you for he/she shall be given a point.) I think I found it by doing an interest search.

How much time are you willing to invest in this community? Over the summer, I'd say a reasonable amount. I'll be working a full day for a few weeks, but at night I'll still be able to get on. Once the school year starts up, I have to admit, probably a lot less time. I'm sort of a study-freak, so I don't really have a life during the school year... other than school.

PART 1 - Canon

1. Have you read all the books? Oh most definitely yes. At least 5 times each. Even when reading other books, I'm usually always reading one of the books, just for kicks. I’m an avid reader, and books like these don’t easily escape my mind. I pretty must just loop around (once I finish the 5th, I'll start reading the 1st again). And of course, I'm unhealthily excited for book numero six, which is why I’ve started rereading them from the time I wake up to the time I go to sleep. I realllly don’t do much over the summer.... ^_^

2. Give us your personal interpretation of each Hogwarts house (in
terms of atmosphere, mentality, intra-house relationships et cetera -
these are just a few examples).
Gryffindor - These are the types of people that will go to any lengths for just about anyone. I don't think it's just bravery (although many are), I think it's a hunger to keep their pride and protect everyone... or at least, everyone they like. Additionally, they're generally the first to accept bad news, and won't try to deny the undeniable. They hold grudges, and first impressions matter a lot. That said, I also think that these can be changed, with some type of drastic encounter. They have giant hearts, but they're only reserved for certain people; the people they love, and will protect. If one house is "act first, think later," it's them. If something happens, they trust instinct without necessarily thinking about the consequences. This could be, at times, reckless. However far they may go, they do know when to quit and ask for help; though, the line is very thin, and occasionally, it may be crossed. Gryffindors generally get along with Puffs and Ravenclaws, and of course, have a mutual enmity with the Slytherins. This could be for two possible reasons: I find these two houses to be extraordinarily similar, so it's possible that they just clash. Similarly, the competitiveness in these two houses is the strongest of the four, so they may just have a stronger desire to win. However, I say that lightly, because houses are very general categories, and most times, a person could fit in more than one.

Slytherin - I might as well discuss Slytherin next, because as I said, I find them exceedingly similar to Gryffs. For Slyths, as cliché as this is, “the ends justify the means.” (Like Machiavelli! Well, sort of) They want to win, and gosh darnit, they WILL win, or die trying. I don’t believe they disregard rules, I just think they find loopholes in rules and utilize them to their greatest advantage. These are the more secretive people; they don’t wear their hearts on their sleeves, for fear of rejection or over-exposure. They’re cunning, sharp-witted, and quick to pick up on minute details (i.e. good observers). They keep to themselves, because well, aren’t they the best? If they’re not, then they’ll work at it until they are. I think they generally keep to their own house because people usually feel more comfortable with others like them. And Slyths are really the most noticeable house with the wit and stealth, so why not associate with each other?

Hufflepuff - I gotta say, I love the Puffs. I think most people just say that Hufflepuffs are “good, not pushovers, strong sense of justice, etc...” But I disagree with that, because I see that more of Gryffindor than Hufflepuff. While those traits to apply to Puffs, I don’t think that’s what makes them special, what sets them apart from the other houses. The ONE clear trait I see of Puffs that not all houses possess is: loyalty. I think all other 3 houses might disregard this if something bigger and brighter is in their future, but not a Puff. They stand by each other, and if a secret is told, a secret is kept. I don’t think all Puffs are “nice,” because people can be “mean” and loyal. Being nice and mean are so vague that I don’t think they can be used to describe a house, but someone can be rude to others and still loyal to their friends. This loyalty translates into a need to keep their friends safe, which is where the stereotype of “determined and not pushovers” comes in. While I think that’s true, I think it’s based off of the loyalty. They’ll pretty much give anyone a chance, but once you’ve proven you’re not worth your time, they won’t trust you. I think this is the Puffs main reason for not getting along with Slyths - their trust has been betrayed too many times, so they don’t feel a need to be loyal to them. In the 2nd book, Justin Finch-Fletchley, and all the Puffs, felt such animosity towards Harry because he betrayed their loyalty by “egging the snake on.”

Ravenclaw - Simply put, they crave knowledge and learning. There’s a thirst to know more, and once that thirst is quenched, they get hungry. So the cycle keeps going, and they keep learning. However, I believe someone can be absolutely stupid and still be in Ravenclaw. I don’t think it’s the intelligence that puts someone in Ravenclaw, I think it’s how intelligent someone wants to be. So, if someone is “dumb” but just wants to learn anyways, I definitely think they’ll go to Ravenclaw. It’s their passion, and their want to succeed. But, not through trickery or lies... through the truth, through hard-cold facts, and information. They get along with Puffs and Gryffs, not Slyths. The only reason I can think of for the lack of friendship is the fact that Slyths tend to deal more in secrecy and deception, whereas Ravenclaws prefer the information out in the open. Or, there’s always the possibility that they just find Slyths mean (well, Malfoy, at least).

And, on a completely different note, I'd just like to say that while these are my impressions, I know there are exceptions and I hope I didn't offend anyone with my opinions.

3. What would be your favourite flavour of Bertie Bott’s Every
Flavour Beans and why (note: as the name implies, all possible flavours
exist)? Hmm. Well this is easy! Chocolate mint. I love it. I’m not sure how to describe the taste... chocolate is delicious, but I just love the extra feeling mint gives, like the chocolate is the naughty one, the pleasure, but then mint is the angel, it cleanses you and keeps you refreshed and wanting more. I can’t really describe it, other than it’s great.

4. If you were on your House’s Quidditch Team, which position would
you preferably play and why? Though I don’t play team sports, I would love to be a chaser. Keeper wouldn’t work because I don’t like things coming very hard at me, and I’m probably not strong enough to be a beater. I couldn’t really see myself as a seeker, and I’m not sure why. I guess I’d keep comparing myself to Harry Potter, who’s a star, and I can’t see myself being that good. There’s just something to being part of a 3-person chaser team, so that not all of the pressure is on you. But at the same time, there’d be that rush of excitement when the ball goes through the goal, knowing that I helped my team to score (and I’d trust the beaters to keep bludgers away from me, thank you very much).

5. (Optional) What HP conspiracy theory do you hold true unless it
is textually proven otherwise? (i.e. Snape is a vampire, Ron is
Dumbledore, etc. -there are loads of these theories. Feel free to contribute
your own)? I’m not sure if this is quite what you’re asking, but... that in the next book, either the Weasleys or Remus Lupin will be appointed some type of guardian to Harry. After all, Lily and James appointed Sirius, because not only was he their friend, but they knew Sirius would risk his life for Harry. So, common sense just tells me that Sirius would try to do the same, and these are the 2 most obvious people to protect Harry, the 2 people that I believe would die for him.

6. (Optional. If you can't answer #5, make sure you answer this
one.) What is your favorite book aside from HP and why? Wait, only one?? Can I put two? And if I’m not allowed, you can only pay attention to the first... but I honestly do have two favorite books.
1. The Wedding by Nicholas Sparks. This is the best love story I’ve ever read. It’s love at its roots, the type of bond that will do anything, when given the opportunity. It made me yearn for that same type of love (not from family, from a, err.. “significant other?”), and very few books inflict such emotions.
2. (please?) Trickster’s Choice by Tamora Pierce. I really enjoy this book because it deals with such an intricate web of stealth, and you really need to think about all the information. This is spying and deceit at it’s best, coupled with great characters and an equally intriguing plot.

7. What would your Room of Requirement look like? Apart from it looking exactly like Hagrid's Hut... I’m not really sure, because I’m at such an odd point in life, when my wants and needs change almost daily. I guess, at this very moment, a room full of all my very best friends. Two days after school ended, my 4 best friends skipped off to camp, but as I don’t go, I’ve missed them terribly (and been very bored, I might add). It’s only been about 3 days, and I can’t wait for that day, a week and a half from now, when they’ll be back. So, I guess that’s what I really, really want right now.

8. Describe your wand and tell us why you picked that design.
Phew, here I go: 9 inches, inflexible, and rosewood with a single unicorn hair. I picked this by going to http://www.darkmark.com/c.c?l=choosewand&t=Ollivanders%20Wand%20Test and selecting my favorite from each category, essentially creating my ideal wand. And this fits me perfectly, because my favorite subject is charms, which this wand happens to be great for, according to the description at the bottom.

What's Your Personality Type?

10. Who is your role model and why? I don’t really have a role model, for the simple reason that I don’t know what I want to do in life. I’m only 14, and I have so many interests, but not one specific passion. Because of this, I can’t choose one person to really inspire me.

11. What would you like to have accomplished at the end of your
life? My biggest desire (though I’m a very idealistic teenager, probably) is to have a wonderful husband, three great kids (two girls and a boy), and a puppy. I want to love someone else, and have them love me back. Career-wise, I want to do something involving math, and my gut leads me to say an accountant, though I’ve never really done accounting. I don’t want to be famous, and although it would be nice to invent a cure for cancer, I just want a quiet, “simple” life.

12. Would you sooner commit a crime against your kin or your
countrymen? Well, as I’m petrified of breaking any rules, neither. But if forced, I’d have to say countrymen, because I could never do anything to my family, for the obvious reason that I love them way too much.

13. What would your animagus be and why? I’d have to say some type of bird, possibly an eagle. They usually have a commanding air about them, and are thought to be extremely intelligent, observant, and perceptive. But at the same time, an eagle, like any bird, can be very vocal when there’s a possibility of danger or an unknown (at a science museum, I read this whole thing about the different pitches of their chirps and what they mean to other animals/how they warn of predators. It was very interesting).

14. What would your patronus be and why? Well, if I base it off James Potter (where the animagus and patronus are the same), then I guess it would be an eagle? I’m not really sure about this one.

15. What career would you consider if you were indeed part of the
wizarding world and why? My favorite subjects are arithmancy and charms, but as we’ve only been exposed to the wizarding world from the viewpoint of Harry Potter, I don’t know a great deal about the different professions available. I DO know that I wouldn’t like to be an auror, or really any risk-involved job; I’m too paranoid of any type of danger. The only career I can think of would be a code breaker, like Bill Weasley, for Gringotts. However, that’s a very tentative choice, and to be honest, I have no clue.
