LUMOS SORTING APPLICATION

Name: Marie

Age (13 or up; we stick to LJ rules): 20

Location: Georgia, USA

Where did you hear about this community? (Please tell us which
lj user recommended you for he/she shall be given a point.) hphotlips and to_each_her_own. I found out about this community through both on the same day, so I have to mention them both.

How much time are you willing to invest in this community? Plenty. I adore communities such as these, and feel that I can make a rather significant contribution here, especially in graphics. Not because I think I'm "all that", as the kids say, but because I enjoy making tons of them. I'm constantly online most nights after going to work and school. Sleep is for the weak, after all.

PART 1 - Canon

1. Have you read all the books? Of course. Several times, as a matter of fact. In the last week I've re-read all 5 books in preparation for the upcoming 6th novel. I didn't get into the HP books until the HP: PoA came out, simply because I thought they were another fad. But a good friend of mine recommended it so I tried it out, and liked what I tried.

You don't ask for this but my favorite one is HP: GoF, simply because it felt like we were starting to get more depth and action occurring. I also think this is because they are growing up, and it's always fun to see the mind through a teenage boy.

2. Give us your personal interpretation of each Hogwarts house (in
terms of atmosphere, mentality, intra-house relationships et cetera -
these are just a few examples).

As a note to start off with, I don't necessarily think that the Houses are based on things that are exclusive to any one house. It's based on more of a dominant trait. Make sense? Let me try a rather obvious example, Hermione. She obviously has the intellect that is generally associated with Ravenclaw, yet she was sorted into Gryffindor. Here, let me see if my explanations of the Houses clear this up.

Ravenclaw
Of course, they are known for being the "brains", so to say. But it's not necessarily their knowledge, so much as their thirst for knowledge that sets them apart and is their dominating trait. I see them as people that do the extra reading recommended in courses for fun. They are the analytical people, that see how things are put together and how to take them apart.

Slytherin
Known for their cunning and pride, and at times a certain sense of superiority. I think that the dominant trait here in this house is their ambition and what they will do to achieve what they want. They do what they have too in order to get what they want, even if it includes things that are generally frowned upon, to put it gently. Their ambition and what they achieve lead to their sense of pride, and that pride in turn encourages their cunning, since they will do what they can to keep themselves in such high regard.

Gryffindor
They are known for their boldness and rashness. Here, the dominant trait would have to be their bravery. And bravery in many ways doesn't have to do with slaying a dragon every weekend. It has to do with bravery in everyday situations, such as standing up for yourself and for what you believe in, even when nobody else supports you.

Hufflepuff
Sadly they are known widely as "push-overs". This is not the case. They are fiercely loyal, and I would have to say that this house's dominating trait is their sense of fairness. This does not mean they can't possess any of the traits the other houses are typically known for. In fact, when they are described as "the lot", that means that they are a house full of people with many different traits, not just people that are too stupid or weak to fit into anyplace else. Hufflepuffs are content with what they have, and see look just a little bit harder to find the good in the world.

So, I do think that all houses are capable of having all the traits. After all, in real life nobody is that two dimensional. I do believe that the Sorting Hat basis it's decisions on traits most prevalant in the person. And hopefully my descriptions backed me up on this thought process, heh.

3. What would be your favourite flavour of Bertie Bott’s Every
Flavour Beans and why (note: as the name implies, all possible flavours
exist)?
Dark Chocolate Decadence, a type of drink made of Godiva chocolate. I had one the other day, and it was perfection. So I'll go with that.

4. If you were on your House’s Quidditch Team, which position would
you preferably play and why?
Seeker. In this position, the fate of the game rests on you. I would rather have the fate of something like this in my hands, rather than having to rely on someone else.

Of course, this is an "if" question, because in this case I would actually be extremely good at what I choose, correct? I work out, but hand-eye coordination is not my arena of expertise.

5. (Optional) What HP conspiracy theory do you hold true unless it
is textually proven otherwise? (i.e. Snape is a vampire, Ron is
Dumbledore, etc. -there are loads of these theories. Feel free to contribute
your own)? Wait, Ron is Dumbledore? Oh yes, the chess thing. I lean towards this one more than anything, but I'm not really fanatical about any conspiracy in general. I do find this one appealing because it's so inticrate. It paints Dumbledore in a sort of Slytherin light, doing what he can to manipulate Harry towards his goal. And especially with his regarding Harry as his son of sorts, it makes me wonder about what sort of outcome he would want in the end. Ok, see? Now I'm thinking about conspiracies and this has me pondering now.

6. (Optional. If you can't answer #5, make sure you answer this
one.) What is your favorite book aside from HP and why?
My favorite book at this moment is Me Talk Pretty One Day by David Sedaris. It's not exactly a literary classic, but I re-read it all the time. It appeals to me. I know that I should read books that are good for me, and I do. Sometimes. But generally even so-called "classics" I won't read if I find them dull and uninteresting.

7. What would your Room of Requirement look like? Apart from it looking exactly like Hagrid's Hut...Hmm, while I'm not too concerned of how it looks, I'm more concerned of what's in it. It would have large sums of cash available of course, preferably in unmarked bills. Heh, I kid. I dunno, I would want it to be functional for what I needed, a place to rest and plan. I know that it would have to have all the luxuries I want, but the small details aren't that important.

8. Describe your wand and tell us why you picked that design.
While looking for wand properties, this came up under Holly: Holly also symbolizes holiness, consecration, material gain, physical revenge, beauty, and immortality, as well as peace, goodwill and health. Seems to be like an overall balanced and complicated material to make a wand out, so I'll choose that. And as for the core, a phoenix feather I would choose, for it is a rather powerful item that would be good for just about any magic I would do.

The Doer

You are adventurous and risk taking. You act first, think second.
You love being the center of attention. Chances are you were the class clown.
Competitive, charming, and charismatic - you have your own code of honor.
You live a flexible life, bouncing between a series of activies that interest you.

The Thinker

You are analytical and logical - and on a quest to learn everything you can.

The Visionary

You possess good negotiating skills and can convince anyone of anything.
Happy to be the center of attention, you love to tell stories and show off.

Your #5 Match: ISFP

The Artist

You are a gifted artist or musician (though your talents may be dormant right now).
You enjoy spending your free time in nature, and you are good with animals and children.
Simply put, you enjoy beauty in all its forms and live for the simple pleasures in life.
Gentle, sensitive, and compassionate - you are good at recognizing people's unspoken needs.

You would make a good veterinarian, pediatrician, or composer.

What's Your Personality Type?

I dislike children in general, but otherwise, pretty close to the truth.

10. Who is your role model and why?
Generally I go search for someone to put down for this question, but I really don't have one. I mean, there are people that I admire and respect, but there is no one person that makes me strive to be like them. I tend to look to myself and focus on my actions, rather than be like somebody else.

11. What would you like to have accomplished at the end of your
life?
I would like to have enjoyed my life. I'm still at a period of time where I have so many options and have so many paths I can take. But I do know that at the end of my life I would like to look back and think, I accomplished everything I wanted, and was happy and pretty much enjoyed the ride.

12. Would you sooner commit a crime against your kin or your
countrymen?
Against my countrymen. Blood runs thicker than water and all that. My mother is the only family I have left, and being an only child I feel extremely protective of her, and could never hurt her on purpose. The same goes for my Step-father as well, unfortunately I've never lived in a place longer than 2 years, and so I have a rather strong bond with them. I find that most people can step in and out of my life without much troubling me too much. After all, I've been to 16 schools growing up, and lived in places as far away as Italy and Guam. My parents are the only people that have been in my life continuously.

13. What would your animagus be and why?
Hmm, a wolf. It's a powerful animal, able to take care of itself. It's an intelligent animal, known for :

• Instinct linked with intelligence
• Social and familial values
• Outwitting enemies
• Ability to pass unseen
• Steadfastness
• Skill in protection of self and family
• Taking advantage of change

I've never thought about it before, but after taking a few quizzing and getting the wolf it doesn't seem like a bad animal to be an animagus of.

14. What would your patronus be and why?
It would be a bear. One of the very last gifts my father gave me before he passed away was of a white bear, and so my patronus would be a white bear.

15. What career would you consider if you were indeed part of the
wizarding world and why?
Either an Auror or an Unspeakable. Both seem exciting and so different. And both are rather noble ways to make a mark on the world. Although I'd probably go with something more practical in the end, like a shopowner of some sort in order to assure success and money.
