starrysummer's lj, actually, just today.
How much time are you willing to invest in this community? I'm an lj junky, I'm afraid, and while I'm busy getting ready for my wedding, I love discussing HP with other fans.
PART 1 - Canon
1. Have you read all the books? Oh, yes, and the charity publications as well. We have them in French and English, and I've been scouting for the Hebrew editions.
2. Give us your personal interpretation of each Hogwarts house (in
terms of atmosphere, mentality, intra-house relationships et cetera -
these are just a few examples).
Gryffindor. Gryffindors are knights. They follow a code of honour, which may or may not coincide with the rules of their society. Gryffindors tend to follow things whole-heartedly, a "my country, right or wrong" sort, and seem the kind to love lost causes. They are fire types, who burn brightly and dramatically. When they are good, they are very, very good. When they are bad, they will be your worst enemy. Gryffindors suffer from moral high ground issues and have a hard time listening to opinions that do not conincide with their own.
Hufflepuff. Hufflepuffs are healers. They will give everything they have for their friends, for what they believe is right. They lead with their heart, and give their loyalty cautiously. A Hufflepuff is as good as his or her word. They are earth types, stable and well-grounded. Never attack that which a Huffler holds dear, for like their badger emblem, they will mess your stuff up. Hufflepuffs have a hard time escaping the status quo and thinking outside the box, not for a lack of inspiration but for sheer practicality's sake. New ideas don't always work and Hufflepuffs want things that will work, above all.
Ravenclaw. Ravenclaws are scholars. They live in their heads primarily. Not geniuses per se, Ravenclaws are more interested in potential than the practical. Usually, they excel in one subject or another, for Ravenclaws are the type who will devote insane time and energy into a subject that fascinates them, whether it is useful or not. Ravenclaws are air types, more interested in ideas and concepts than how to make the ideas and concepts work. Ravenclaws have a hard time reconciling the world in their heads with the world around them, and because of this can seem ditzy or overly paranoid. In their own world, it makes sense. In the real world, they just suffer a lack of connection.
Slytherin. Slytherins are politicians. They want what will work for them and their kin, and everyone else is secondary. Slytherins thrive on success, and their morals are relevant to that. They aren't evil, as it is just as easy to see a wicked Gryffindor or Hufflepuff as it is to see a wicked Slytherin. Slytherins just keep to their own, focus on their own, and if you are not in that group, you cease to matter. Slytherins are water types, working off of intuition and emotional ties. They are insular and because of that, are disconnected from others. Slytherins function in an us versus them world, and woe be it to a them who crosses a Slytherin.
3. What would be your favourite flavour of Bertie Bott’s Every
Flavour Beans and why (note: as the name implies, all possible flavours
exist)? I'm showing my Southern roots, but hash browns with cheese, onions and mushrooms, smothered in ketchup. Southern Style Waffle House Hash Brown. Yup.
4. If you were on your House’s Quidditch Team, which position would
you preferably play and why? Keeper. I was a wicked goalie in hockey, and if there's one thing I can do, it's fling myself into harm's way. Keepers have the unique position of being able to watch the whole game and manage strategy as they go, given their static position on the goal posts, so it's a crucial position, if over-looked.
5. (Optional) What HP conspiracy theory do you hold true unless it
is textually proven otherwise? (i.e. Snape is a vampire, Ron is
Dumbledore, etc. -there are loads of these theories. Feel free to contribute your own)? Am I a bad HP fan for not paying too much attention to the crack-pot theories out there? I was amused by the Knight-to-King theory at least...
6. (Optional. If you can't answer #5, make sure you answer this
one.) What is your favorite book aside from HP and why? Vercor's Le Silence de la Mer. I adore the simple, stark way he shows the truth of the Occupation of France by the Nazis and what it meant, and the fact that Vercors uses hands to tell the truth--looks may lie, words may be false, but hands are utterly honest. It is so beautiful, both in French and English, and what also amazes me is the risks Vercors took to get the book published and out there so the world would know what was happening in France. It is so important, so crucial to French literature, and to existential literature in general. I think it also illustrates my other theory in life, that of the banality of evil. Von Ebrennac is so mundane, and yet by being a Nazi, he is evil. The contrast is stark and honest.
7. What would your Room of Requirement look like? Aside from looking like Hagrid's hut, it would be big and open, lots of clean modern design and windows, with my easel, all the oil paints and supplies I need and tons of canvas. And a kicking sound system for my beloved iPod, since I can't paint in silence.
8. Describe your wand and tell us why you picked that design. My wand would be made of creamy lilac wood, 9" with a unicorn hair core. Lilac trees are tied in with the element of air and are sacred to bards, imbued with a creative power and the ability to communicate love through delight. All of the elements have to do with love, purity and beauty, the main goals of an artist.

You are a natural leader - with confidence and strength that inspires others.

The Thinker
You are analytical and logical - and on a quest to learn everything you can.
Smart and complex, you always love a new intellectual challenge.
Your biggest pet peeve is people who slow you down with trivial chit chat.

What's Your Personality Type? 10. Who is your role model and why?
Dr Elie Wiesel has been my role model since I met him a few years ago. He has survived the depravity of the human soul in Auschwitz-Birkenau, then instead of languishing in the darkness, he went on to write and create and embrace peace in the world. Dr Wiesel has been a constant advocate for the suffering, and he embodies Hillel's axiom: "If not me, whom? If not now, when?" He uses his art and his voice to raise up people in need and his committment to peace is an inspiration.
11. What would you like to have accomplished at the end of your
life? I should like to have raised a lovely family of caring, ethical, intelligent people who are aware of the world and their greater role in it. So long as I am remembered in the lives of my children, I have done enough.
12. Would you sooner commit a crime against your kin or your
countrymen? My countrymen. Blood is thicker than water, to use the cliché, and one of the enduring lessons from the Holocaust is that we must protect each other and not depend on our nations and our governments to care.
13. What would your animagus be and why? A songbird, simply for perspective. I think that's the great gift of birds--they can see above and beyond what we can see, hense sayings such as bird's eye view or eagle eyes, and the songbird can communicate through its calls.
14. What would your patronus be and why? I associate protection with, embarassingly enough, swans. Swans are some of the meanest birds on the planet, and while they are deceptively beautiful, when a swan wants to protect its young, you will be hurting. So a swan for me.
15. What career would you consider if you were indeed part of the
wizarding world and why? More than likely, the same as my career now, artist and housewife. While there are a fantastic spectrum of choices, I am happiest at my easel and in my home, and I think that is the backbone of any society. That, and it would be utterly fascinating to see how to make magical portraits, and what artist could pass up that chance!
