LUMOS SORTING APPLICATION

Name: Jessica

Age (13 or up; we stick to LJ rules): 18

Location: Presently Denver, Colorado however I'm moving back home to San Diego, California in about a month. :)

Where did you hear about this community? (Please tell us which lj user recommended you for he/she shall be given a point.) frodolives33, Chase left a nice explanatory comment in my LJ.

How much time are you willing to invest in this community? A lot! I LOVE LJ communities that actually have substance, and this one seems like a lot of fun. Plus, I'm just setting up my own HP community that's got quite a different spin on it than most, so I'd love to be affiliates with you guys eventually. I spend loads of time on LJ and I'm a dedicated mod in 4 communities, and a dedicated member in lots of others.

PART 1 Canon

1. Have you read all the books? Yes, about 3-4 times each. I didn't read them until Christmas 2003 when I asked for the box set in order to catch up on the entire thing. My favorite kids that I used to babysit got me hooked on the movies and I assumed if the movies were that good the books had to be even better, and naturally I was right about that! I read SS and COS in one day each, then POA, GOF, and OOtP in two days each. Since then between new book discoveries I've picked them all up and read and re-read them over again a few times each...they're just that good. Now, I'm all set to go to the midnight party at the Waldenbooks that's in the mall that I work at, and to take off work Saturday so I can read non stop. :) 6 Days!!!

2. Give us your personal interpretation of each Hogwarts house (in terms of atmosphere, mentality, intra-house relationships et cetera these are just a few examples).

Gryffindor - I think Gryffindor is possibly one of the more diverse houses in terms of atmosphere and mentality. The Gryffindors were all chosen because the sorting hat saw in them something that indicated exceptional bravery, however bravery isn't necissarily a uniting factor. Some Gryffindors are quieter, some more outgoing, some work incredibly hard and some skive off lessons at every chance, some have heroic deeds to their name and some haven't had their chance yet. Overall I'd say everyone contributes to making the house seem very daring, motivated (all the Gryffindors seem to have a passion, no matter what that is - ie Fred & George with their joke shop, Neville with Herbology, and Hermione with
SPEW), and often mischevious. Rule bending/breaking is a way of life for Gryffindors. I really identify with their tendencies to act on instinct, that seems to be a repeated trend in the deciding factor of many Gryffindors' actions, all the way back to the Marauders. As far as house unity goes, I believe the Gryffindors will be among the first to recognize it's importance, but their stubbornness may hinder progress in inter-house relations.

Ravenclaw - Ravenclaws are a bit harder to analyze, as we don't see many main characters of this house and don't get quite as much of a glimpse of their individual traits. We know that they are intelligent, so that probably means that they are a less rambunctious group than the Gryffindors, as they most likely spending more time studying. Being that they are renowned in the school for being intelligent, this may give them the sort of attitude that Hermione often displays towards Harry and Ron when they don't do their homework. They might look down on the rest of the school on occasion, but that doesn't mean they don't feel fondness towards their peers or loyalty to the school. As far as house relations go, I believe the Ravenclaws will be able to appeal to members of every single other house - especially Slytherin - and point out the logic that they are stronger together.

Hufflepuff - I think Hufflepuff is often dismissed as having no specific defining trait, however I don't think this is the case. Loyalty is often mentioned when they are spoken of in the sorting hat song, and I think canon has definitely displayed this to be true. Hufflepuffs are even more diverse than Gryffindors, and that is what makes me think that along with Ravenclaw they will be big pushers for unity, but in their own way. The loyalty they display to their peers in friendship and possibly in battle will be a unifying force. When they aren't fighting, their exceptional work ethic will come though as they push the others to come together. As far as atmosphere goes, I think the Hufflepuffs often feel that they are downtrodden, underestimated, and that they must prove themselves. They might not act confidently around members of other houses that may be intimidating, however I'm sure when the are together in groups they are incredibly friendly with one another. I think they'll get their chance to play a major part and prove that they are more than a "spare parts" house, if you will.

Slytherin - Though we have some pretty negative examples of Slytherin House, and it has been presented as the house that will be the most adverse to the scool becomining united, (especially since a few select students have parents who are DEATH EATERS) I don't think we can judge their whole house by Draco, Crabbe, and Goyle. Slytherin is a lot like Gryffindor in that it has the possibility of being very diverse and even divided amongst itself. Example, what happens if a muggleborn or half-blood gets sorted into Slytherin? There's no way the house is entirely pure-blooded, I've always been under the impression that that ceased when Salazar Slytherin left the school, plus, it's practically impossible given the limited number of pureblooded families that are even left. So, there's no way that they are all united under the opinion that mudbloods should die and Voldemort should rule all. I think the Slytherins that simply display the traits necessary to have been placed there rather than a pure predisposition for evil will resist less than those that have allegiences to the dark lord,
however the "good" slytherins may even conn the others into unifying with the rest of the school. Slytherins probably treat each other very differently depending on class, heritage, etc. Those who are non-pureblood Slytherins most likely feel out of place and self conscious because of the ones like Malfoy, Crabbe, and Goyle & Co.

3. What would be your favourite flavour of Bertie Bott's Every Flavour Beans and why (note: as the name implies, all possible flavours exist)? I bet a s'more flavored one would be fantastic. You just can't argue with chocolate, grahm cracker, and marshmallow all in one. It would be neat if they were magically warm and melty all the time, too.

4. If you were on your House's Quidditch Team, which position would you preferably play and why? Noting the physical and mental traits needed for each I think I'd be a good seeker. Canon often mentions seekers usually being small and quick, and that definitely fits my description. I am very alert and observant, necessary qualities for the position. I pay attention to detail and I can concentrate for a long time, so I believe I'd be able to find the snitch without getting sidetracked or distracted by all that is going on around me. I also have a strong sense of what teamwork is and sticking to your responsibility so as not to let down the team. I can handle pressure - things such as havning the duty of catching the snitch and winning the game for your team after they've all worked so hard only motivate me to work harder.

5. (Optional) What HP conspiracy theory do you hold true unless it is textually proven otherwise? (i.e. Snape is a vampire, Ron is Dumbledore, etc. there are loads of these theories. Feel free to
contribute your own)? I like the one about Dumbledore having a definite reason for wanting to be on the Chocolate Frog cards. It's whimsical but it makes a lot of sense, and it seems like something JKR
would think of. If Dumbledore can use the cards as a means of hopping around and scoping out the wizarding world, that's an incredible advantage.

6. (Optional. If you can't answer #5, make sure you answer this one.) What is your favorite book aside from HP and why? I really love the His Dark Materials trilogy because it is amazingly written and has a fascinating storyline. It's fantasy with a young hero and heroine so it's along the lines of Harry Potter, however very different in many ways especially because it touches on religon, which JK has (smartly) steered clear of. It is a very creative and moving (even heart-wrenching in some places) story.

7. What would your Room of Requirement look like? Apart from it looking exactly like Hagrid's Hut...

Haha. I suppose that would depend on what I needed it for. I would most likely use it to get away and just have some private time and space. I'm an only child, and with that situation you get used to having time to yourself and it becomes a necessity of life... or at least for me it has. I have loved living in dormitories and sharing the family-like atmosphere of a crowded room full of girls with noisy guys right across the hall, however on occasion I would feel the need to just GET OUT. If I were at Hogwarts, my room of requirement would most likely be a lovely sitting room with many windows and perhaps a balcony, lots of overstuffed furniture to lounge around on as well as a wardrobe full of luxurious pajamas and robes. Maybe a big bed so I could take naps when I want to - something that doesn't happen often when you live with a number of other people in close quarters.

8. Describe your wand and tell us why you picked that design. 10 inches, mahogany, phoenix feather. 10 inches because I heard an interesting theory once that wand length correllates with height, and I'm a shortie, mahogany because it is one of my favorite woods, and phoenix feather because I feel that fundamentally I am much like Harry and that I would share that element of a wand core from a phoenix with him.

What's Your Personality
Type?

10. Who is your role model and why? I have two, one real and one fictional.

My mom, because she's an incredibly disciplined, open minded, creative, intelligent, sophisticated
woman. It's just been the two of us since I was 4 and my parents split, and we're incredibly close. I respect her so much for what she's gone through in her life, and for what an amazing person she is despite all of it. It sounds so cliche for a daughter to look up to her mother, but it's the honest truth.

Hermione Granger is a huge role model for me as a person and as a student - Not only do I identify with her on a lot of levels, but her work ethic always inspires me to push myself to be better and finish early and get the extra credit, to earn that self-satisfaction that you always see within her. She is also very brave - she always does what is necessary to help her friends in the long run. I think in her world she is destined to become a role model for many, and that she does a great job of serving as one for her friends and classmates already. I think she has some hidden insecurities that I identify with as well, and also tries to compensate by excelling at everything.

11. What would you like to have accomplished at the end of your life? I am starting pre-med this fall and I want to be a doctor. That is not only a career goal but a personal goal, I want to help
people. I know I have the ability and drive to do it, so I am going to work hard and accomplish my goal. I want to have the chance to travel all over and do all kinds of crazy things - the kind where beforehand you want to chicken out so badly and afterward you feel a rush of adrenaline, self satisfaction and the intense feeling of wanting to DO IT AGAIN! I also want to raise a family and be a good mother. All in all I want to be happy and never lose sight of the fact that what really matters are the people who love you.

12. Would you sooner commit a crime against your kin or your countrymen? Countrymen. I feel no allegience toward a random citizen, especially not those who are intolerant of people different than them. My family (even if they're a bit wacko) is the most important thing to me, along with those that I consider to be family. I could never do anything to hurt them, especially if I was given an alternative.

13. What would your animagus be and why? I think it would be a cat
because I have many feline qualities. Small, quick, smart, independent... I just can't think of an animal that is a better match for who I am.

14. What would your patronus be and why? Most likely some sort
of wildcat. Something fierce and feline would reflect the qualities within myself that I would use if I were to have to ward off a dementor.

15. What career would you consider if you were indeed part of the
wizarding world and why? I would love to be an Auror. Not only is it a prestigous positon within the wizarding world, but to know that much magic as is needed to obtain the certification for that job would be amazing. I would love to be out there on stealth missions or all-out battles, knowing that I was putting my life on the line to protect others. I've always had the outlook that rules were pretty much just annoying trivialities that got me in trouble (such as being punctual...ugh) but when it comes to evil and serious wrongdoing...let me at it.
