LUMOS SORTING APPLICATION
Name: Laura Elisabeth Abbott. That's Laura because my Mum (a teacher) had never taught a Laura, so she had no awful attachments to it, and because it can't be shortened. This annoys me. Why can't I have a name that can be shortened?
Age: The age of alcohol, voting and gambling that is 18.
Location: The deepest depths of south-England in a huge village in the woody county of Surrey.
Where did you hear about this community? (Please tell us which
lj user recommended you for he/she shall be given a point.)
ameranthine, my once best near friend and now my best far away friend.
How much time are you willing to invest in this community?A lot of time. I like having things I can check up on and add to. Otherwise, I would just lurk on the internet playing javagames, which would rot my brain. That would never do. I need contact with real people.
PART 1 - Canon
1. Have you read all the books? Yes, That doesn't mean that I could recite the exact contents of every book to you. Details of books rarely stick in my head perfectly. Plus, I only own one of the books, otherwise I borrow them or get them from the library. I don't see the point of paying money for fiction books when I can get them from the library for free. Saying that I am definitely going to get the new one when it comes out on Saturday. It would be a crime to go into town at midnight (as I am) and not.
2. Give us your personal interpretation of each Hogwarts house (in
terms of atmosphere, mentality, intra-house relationships et cetera -
these are just a few examples).
Gryffindor
I know most people think of them as outwardly brave but I think they're more committed to a cause. I wouldn't call Ron a brave person, but he is commited to helping Harry and Hermione, which makes him seem brave. They also have a lot of pride and because of that they are competitive, which links back to the whole committed thing again. A Gryffindor likes to be the best at something and normally the centre of attention. I don't mean this in a bad way. This plays to their competitive streak and means that they are likely to be confident and willing to stick up for others in need.
Ravenclaw
Clever, they read their books and enjoy furthering their knowledge more than the other houses. They like things to have a logical outcome but also enjoy debates. They do also like to spread their knowlege with others and use it to help people, instead of using it for their own gain. It does sometimes come across as if they look down on other house because they may deem themselves 'better'. Like Gryffindor there is competitive spirit within the house, although this is likely to be less obvious and more subtle than in other houses. They have pride too, like those from Gryffindor, and are competitive. They like to stick to the rules. These are the type of people that go into being doctors and teachers.
Slytherin
In my mind some of them are often as clever as the Ravenclaws but use their knowledge for their own gain. Then there are some like Crabbe and Goyle that come across as thugs. The one thing that unites them is that they don't have much of a regard to the rules. They'll follow them if there is something in it for them (e.g. Draco behaving around Snape since he doesn't want to be told off and so that his arguments have more weight than say, Harry's). Slytherin seems to be a more class-dependent house, some seeing themselves higher than others in a pecking order. This may not be directly the case as this feeling only seems to surface in Draco in the books. There is some evidence of superiority as it is mentioned that only purebloods are entered into the house of Slytherin. Slytherin are like a pack of wolves, seem to work together most of the time but will also be individually dangerous.
Hufflepuff
I always felt sorry for Hufflepuff as they seemed to be the 'other' house, the one that people go in if they don't fit into any of the others. I do think there are qualities you need to have to be in Hufflepuff. They're kind, caring, reliable: everything that you would want to have in a good friend. They are not likely to judge other peoples opinions so rely on their own judgement of people from their meetings. This can be wise but can also cause them to sometimes be decieved. In the muggle world they would probably be good care assistants or nurses.
3. What would be your favourite flavour of Bertie Bott’s Every
Flavour Beans and why (note: as the name implies, all possible flavours
exist)? Wensleydale Cheese. I love cheese. I think it's becoming a near-addiction. I have cheese almost every evening on biscuits. The Wensleydale flavour would work on a bean, as well, although it is of course cheesy, so you probably wouldn't want to suck on it for very long. Still, I'm sure there is some way of making it work.
4. If you were on your House’s Quidditch Team, which position would
you preferably play and why?
A Beater, because it doesn't rely on me having to catch things as much as the others. Plus, hitting things really hard is fun and I can aim reasonably. I am just no good at catching things that are coming towards me, which rules out Seeker, Chaser and Keeper. I like going fast through the air too, and as a Beater you get to do that. Also I hate having all the attention and pressure on me. Sure, when you're the Beater you're still part of the team but it's not like you're the one really in charge of catching the Snitch or scoring or stopping a goal. Pressure like that crumbles me into a little lump on the floor.
5. (Optional) What HP conspiracy theory do you hold true unless it
is textually proven otherwise? (i.e. Snape is a vampire, Ron is
Dumbledore, etc. -there are loads of these theories. Feel free to contribute
your own)? I have yet to find one that I can believe or one that has not already been answered in the books.
6. (Optional. If you can't answer #5, make sure you answer this
one.) What is your favorite book aside from HP and why?
My favourite book is a compilation of the first three Mallory Towers books by Enid Blyton. They're all about the goings-on in a year at a boarding school in Cornwall in the 1930s (I think). They play lots of lacrosse and have a swimming pool carved out of the rocks by the sea. There are so many different personalities of girls and they play clever tricks on the teachers. They may not be the most intellectually challenging of books and they're possibly rather jolly and posh but I have read them so many times that the spine is falling off the back. I've had the book since I was about seven and I think it must have been the book I grew up with, really. It's also simple to read and I read it whenever I'm ill because it's so easy to concentrate on. The girls' lives in it were always something that I always wished I had. When I was little I practically begged my Mum to let me go to boarding school because I wanted to have a life that resembled theirs, with midnight feasts and playing tricks on the teachers. The books now seem so innocent. I wonder if they were a true reflection of boarding schools at the time or just an ideal that Enid Blyton dreamt up?
7. What would your Room of Requirement look like? Apart from looking exactly like Hagrid's hut... It would be really small be cause I can't stand big empty space, it makes me scared. If the room is small, then I can see everything that happens in it. It would have a massive bookshelf full of books that I want to read so that I don't have to walk to the library. I would have a radio with a cd player so I had music to listen to and my laptop so that I could write endlessly with a really comfortable chair that didn't hurt my back. I would also have a really huge comfortable sofa so that I could sit back and read my books and sleep in.
8. Describe your wand and tell us why you picked that design. I'd have a birch wand, because they're meant to be good luck and I can always do with some luck. I'm a great believer in luck tokens. Plus, birch trees are my favourite trees, especially the silver ones (they were the first tree I learnt to identify because they're so obvious). My wand would be about ten inches long and reasonably thick, because I am great at snapping things in two (I have got through my fair share of rulers). I would also want it bendy though, because then it would make a good swish when it goes through the air, and it would less likely to break. I would have unicorn hair in it simply because I like unicorns. I am not great at deep and meaningful answers here - I just have a weakness for anything with four legs that can neigh.

What's Your Personality Type? 10. Who is your role model and why? I don't have one, really, because if you base yourself on someone you only get disappointed when you can't meet what they have achieved. I would probably have to say mine is a lady that I saw on TV once who had had cancer, got rid of it and then got it again but was still happy and enjoying her life. I would love to enjoy my life that much. Unfortunately, I think that the only people who enjoy life fully are those who are just about to lose it. However hard you try to make your life the best, you can you never have a proper motive until it's nearly gone.
11. What would you like to have accomplished at the end of your
life?
To have gone to various parts of the world that I have only seen on TV, such as Japan, Italy and America. That way, in my mind I could prove to myself that they really exist. Of course, I know they exist, but I just want to see and feel them. Other than that, to have a loving family and friends and to know that I made a difference to their lives, that they would actually miss me when I'm gone.
12. Would you sooner commit a crime against your kin or your
countrymen?
Countrymen, because I feel closer to my kin. They're directly around me. I'm all for national pride, but I love all of my family and however nice I wish to be I can't say I love all of my countrymen.
13. What would your animagus be and why? I think I would like to be a Shetland Pony. I've always had more respect for them than the other breeds of horses. They look so innocent but they can be vicious. I'm not saying that I am vicious - I'd just like to be this litte horse that no one would suspect could kick and bite and run really fast. It's also an easy way to get food by looking all cute. Also, whenever I am annoyed I could just kick something or roll over in the grass. The trappings of this human body, it's just not fair!
14. What would your patronus be and why? Something big and frightening. Probably a camel. I know it sounds stupid, but camels are vindictive: they hiss, kick and spit. If I was a Dementor, I would be scared. Saying that, I like camels when they're not hissing and kicking. They're ugly in a likable way. They're reliable too: what other animal would be able to trudge endlessly across the desert with only a huge lump of fat to keep them going?
15. What career would you consider if you were indeed part of the
wizarding world and why? Something where I could get outside... although I really can't think of a job that would involve me having to be outside. Maybe something along the Care of Magical Creatures line where I could work with animals, or helping organise the Quidditch World Cup? I like organising things, as long as I am allowed to write it out on a big piece of paper and put it all in order or else my mind becomes a big jumble and I end up trying to do several things at once.
That's where working with animals would be great. I wouldn't have to write stuff down. It would be simple, and animals are great because they just love you and don't expect anything back (apart from some who just get it into their mind that they're going to hate you from the word go and however many treats you put in front of them it's not going to change their mind).
There's my career plan then. I would work with animals for some of the year and help to organise Quidditch matches. That way I get some variety, plus free Quidditch tickets!
