LUMOS SORTING APPLICATION

Name: Laura Beth Jarett

Age (13 or up; we stick to LJ rules): 17. I love this age- it always reminds me of the Janis Ian song At Seventeen. Beautiful song.

Location: Parkland, FL. You could also call it Boring Snobsville, but Parkland will do.

Where did you hear about this community? (Please tell us which
lj user recommended you for he/she shall be given a point.) I was just browsing through Harry Potter communities, and found this one. I lurk around LJ when I have nothing else better to do. Today, though, I'm just relaxing because I want to save all my energy for the Harry Potter 6 release tonight. I want to start reading ASAP.

How much time are you willing to invest in this community? I am willing to invest a good amount of time into the community. I adore the series and am a huge fanfic reader. I love having a community to check up on, especially if everyone (including myself) is active.

PART 1 - Canon

1. Have you read all the books? Yes. Another reason I love my age- I've practically grown up alongside Harry. I read the first one when I was 10 or 11, and the pattern has continued. It's not as close at this point, but I still can relate. I love(d) every single one of them.

2. Give us your personal interpretation of each Hogwarts house (in
terms of atmosphere, mentality, intra-house relationships et cetera -
these are just a few examples). I suppose I'll start with Gryffindor, because that's where things are centered in the books. I think the Gryffindors have a warm, welcoming feel to their common room- I can't imagine it ever being cold. They're all about courage, bravery, and standing up for what you believe in. They have a very determined mentality, and I can imagine a good lot of them being stubborn in one way or another. The relationships within the house are tight-knit and friendly, and aside from the Slytherins, they have no problems with the other houses. I believe that they can relate more to the Hufflepuffs than the Ravenclaws simply because Hufflepuffs are all about loyalty, which goes hand in hand with integrity.

The Hufflepuffs, like the Gryffindors, have a comforting common room. I'd imagine it would be more subdued, a little less energetic... but only because they don't have the fiery determination of the Gryffindors. They may not be the smartest, bravest, or most cunning students on the face of the planet, but I see them as kind and loyal to the end. They'd be the least likely to have fights with their friends over petty matters, and if the occasion called, they would defend someone with their life. Within the house, relations are more emotional than logical- no bonding would occur over Advanced Potions homework. The students would bond over social matters. As far as the other houses go, I see them getting along with the Gryffindors best, then the Ravenclaws. The Hufflepuffs in general don't really relate to the mentalities of Slytherin students; however, if they did make friends early on with Slytherins, they'd remain doggedly loyal. Ravenclaws and Hufflepuffs are like the Slytherins and the Gryffindors- in a sort of rivalry, but much more subtle. Intelligence vs. heart.

The Ravenclaws have a bookish, no-nonsense common room. Most everything would be organized, and I'd imagine there would be plenty of places where students would be comfortable studying. The Ravenclaws are determined, but not in the same way as the Gryffindors. They love to prove themselves through perfect potions and admirable transfigurations rather than bravery or strength. The majority have a little sarcastic streak and can sometimes be condescending. Within the house, the Ravenclaws would bond over grades and intelligent, informed discussion. Of course, they ARE teenagers, so they do share their amount of gossip, but their lives do not revolve around it. The Ravenclaws are probably the most neutral when it comes to the other houses. They can get along with Slytherins and Gryffindors alike without the slightest qualm. If forced to choose between a Gryffindor and a Slytherin, their moral values would have to play a huge role. Logic wouldn't be able to help them. And although they don't particularly like the Hufflepuffs as much, they don't truly hold much against them. They're just not as smart, that's all.

And finally, the Slytherins. Seeing as their common room is in the dungeon, I can only deduce that their common room is cold and dank. Fitting for a snake, perhaps. Because many Slytherin students happen to be from wealthy families, the common room feels rich as well. Detached almost, with its leather chairs and dark green decor. The students are truly cunning, perhaps a bit snooty, but they are smarter than many would guess. They're sneaky like that. They are underestimated, and most use that to their advantage. They're not above cheating to get what they want, but it's not bad in their eyes. They are being ambitious and are doing everything in their power to get their way. Within the house, the students would bond over both gossip and their desires. Heck, they thrive on gossip- blackmail is a powerful tool. As far as the other houses go, the house the Slytherins could relate to the most is the Ravenclaw house. Both believe they are the best for one reason or another, and both houses are founded on intelligence in one form or another. Naturally, they wouldn't get along with the Gryffindors because their mentalities are completely different. A Slytherin doesn't need to worry about honor or honesty, so long as they win. Similarly, they're not the closest with the Hufflepuffs because they are similar to the Gryffindors.

3. What would be your favourite flavour of Bertie Bott’s Every
Flavour Beans and why (note: as the name implies, all possible flavours
exist)? Though I'm not a big fan of the texture of jelly beans, I'd probably love a Key Lime Pie flavored bean. Key Lime Pie is my favorite dessert. Actually, I'd enjoy any citrusy flavor.

4. If you were on your House’s Quidditch Team, which position would
you preferably play and why? I would love to be a beater. It's the perfect way to vent frustrations, and I'm a much better defensive player than I am offensive. I play softball, and I'm much better at fielding (my throwing accuracy is spot-on) than hitting.

5. (Optional) What HP conspiracy theory do you hold true unless it
is textually proven otherwise? (i.e. Snape is a vampire, Ron is
Dumbledore, etc. -there are loads of these theories. Feel free to contribute
your own)? Oh wow, I haven't heard the one about where Ron is Dumbledore. That's an odd one. Well, I don't have any conspiracy theories- I don't think JKR would do something completely out of the blue like THAT.

6. (Optional. If you can't answer #5, make sure you answer this
one.) What is your favorite book aside from HP and why? Right now, I'd have to say my favorite book is Memoirs of a Geisha by Arthur Golden. It's an amazingly written book; I was always very reluctant to put it down. The characters are all believable, and it's a fantastic look into the lives of Geisha women back in the first half of the 20th century. I felt like I was living Chiyo's (Sayuri, later on) life alongside her.

7. What would your Room of Requirement look like? Apart from it looking exactly like Hagrid's hut... it would look like a homey little den. I'd probably need it for a day when I felt extremely stressed, so I would want a room to be as relaxing as possible. Comfy couches, lots of sketching paper, a good quill for me to sketch with (and lots of blank ink)... It'd be exactly what I needed.

8. Describe your wand and tell us why you picked that design. My wand would be an 9 3/4" cherry, sturdy, with dragon's heartstring. A little short for a wand, I think, but I'm a little short for a human. It works. Cherry wood is strong and smooth, and I suspect it'd be fantastic for whipping out quickly to fire a spell at someone. Just seems like a great wand for quick reflexes.

What's Your Personality Type?

10. Who do you admire most and why? Truth be told, I admire my friend Nicole. She's smart and amazingly creative at the same time. She has her insecurities, yet she's the one person I know who's completely comfortable with herself. She's bluntly honest, which I adore, and I know that everything she says is something I can believe. She's inspired me to be more upfront with people- I used to try and smooth things over all the time, but it was taking its toll on me. She's introduced me to so many things it's unbelievable.

11. What would you like to have accomplished at the end of your
life? I'd like to have my two cents worth accepted and taken by as many people as possible. I want to become the mom whose kids can talk to her comfortably about anything. I want to have established a life in Asheville, North Carolina. Most importantly, I would like to have cut off all contact from my father by the time I was 20. That's a long story in and of itself.

12. Would you sooner commit a crime against your kin or your
countrymen? My countrymen. Even though I'm not especially fond of some of my kin, I don't think I could personally commit a crime against them. Hey, if I mug a soldier, it's not nearly as bad (in my opinion) as mugging my sister. Even though they're both my family, in a way, I feel more dedicated to my flesh and blood.

13. What would your animagus be and why? I think I would be a Peregrine Falcon. They're small, but they use their agility to their advantage. I love flying, the sensation of heights, etc., so being a bird seems fitting. The Peregrine in particular, however, is an extremely fast bird. I just find that I can relate to their living habits.

14. What would your patronus be and why? My patronus would be a gazelle. They aren't particularly strong, but they are graceful. It also seems that, in the books, typically innocent creatures end up being Patronus. Sure, Harry has a stag, but deer in general aren't considered to be threatening. Majestic, perhaps, but not threatening. And so I believe a Gazelle would be my patronus.

15. What career would you consider if you were indeed part of the
wizarding world and why? I would simply love to be a shop owner in Diagon Alley. I really would love to sell wands, but I wouldn't mind owning a book store or something. I'd also like to be a nurse. Treating magical maladies would be challenging, yet at some points, I could see where it'd be really amusing.
