ATTN: This is a RE-SORTING. I was a much earlier applicant here and at the time my mind was a bit messed up :) The past 10 weeks have been quite honestly life changing. I don't think my original application was a good reflection of who I am, so I am going to attempt this again.
LUMOS SORTING APPLICATION
Name: Danielle
Age (13 or up; we stick to LJ rules): All grown up and the grand age of 21.
Location: Currently Perth, Western Australia, but I think my gypsy spirit will be leading me somewhere else before long.
Where did you hear about this community? (Please tell us which
lj user recommended you for he/she shall be given a point.) Erm, well as a re-sorting I don't think this is really applicable. It's not really fair for one person to get a point for the same messed-up lass twice is it?
How much time are you willing to invest in this community? Now I've gotten through the hardest part of my degree, I should have a lot more time. I hope to open a graphics shop and will definatly participate in the essays etc. The only thing you probably wont see me in is the RP, simply doesn't interest me I'm afraid.
PART 1 - Canon
1. Have you read all the books? Definatly!! I have all the books and they're pretty well thumbed. I am a primary school teacher (elementary that is for you in the US aka 5 - 12 year old children) and can't wait to do a Harry Potter theme with one of my future classes. I think everyone should read them, because they have changed literature so much, and they're just simply so much fun. :)
2. Give us your personal interpretation of each Hogwarts house (in
terms of atmosphere, mentality, intra-house relationships et cetera -
these are just a few examples).
Hufflepuff are often maligned by much of fandom (and indeed, by much of canon), with them basically considered to be a bunch of ‘duffers’, but this is so wrong. One thing I dislike about sorting communities is that people who are hard to sort usually just get shoved in Hufflepuff, but I think it takes very special qualities to be a true Hufflepuff. Take Cedric Diggory for example (I’m a big Cedric fan by the way), he had everything going for him. He was intelligent (we know he was good at transfiguration anyway), he was athletic, handsome, noble-spirited and brave. But even Dumbledore said he was a true Hufflepuff, and that was because of that nobility - he always did the right thing. That’s not to say that Hufflepuffs are all do-gooders either; I know for certain I wouldn’t want to cross a Hufflepuff’s bad side. The flip side to that is that they would be the most loyal friends. I think they would probably tend to stick to themselves though - they are such a close-knit bunch that they couldn’t help but stay close to the others in their house.
Slytherin are the other house that people tend to criticize, but for very different reasons (mostly just because they are evil oooOoher). Personally, I think this is a load of hogwash. One of my close friends is very ambitious, very Slytherin, but I would be the last person on earth to say he was evil. A Slytherin would do as much as it takes, but also as little as it takes to achieve the ends to their means, whatever they may be. The house itself would have a wide range of people; from those who would be fiercely independent and determined to stand alone, to those who would rather support ambitious people, such as Crabbe and Goyle and of course Slughorn from HBP. I think it would be very cliquey, but not necessarily in a bad way.
Ravenclaw is another house that I believe would be full of contradictions - from the street-smart kids to the bookish kids, from those who would rather experience the real thing to those who want to find out the theories instead. The main thing that strikes me about the Ravenclaws is that they can be very independent and fairly introverted. They do things because they want to do them; not for anyone else, not as a means to an end and not because it’s the right thing to do. They would make very good diplomats, having the intelligence and common-sense to see both sides of a story.
Lastly, Gryffindor is the house where bravery, in all its varied forms, comes first. Obviously, those who have the showy, heroic type of bravery would be the shining stars of this house, but it also includes those like Neville, who are brave in different manners, and also those who are strong-willed and strong-of-heart, like Ginny. There are all manners of courage, from physical to moral courage, and I think the Gryffindor house would be a very vibrant place because of these differences. As far as relationships go, I think they’re probably the most sociable house - more willing to interact with each other. They would feed from each other’s bravado. There would be a fair bit of mischief centered in the House because of this, but they would also be very righteous - a strange mix I know, but it fits.
3. What would be your favourite flavour of Bertie Bott’s Every
Flavour Beans and why (note: as the name implies, all possible flavours
exist)?
Fresh, sun ripened cherries. Because there is something so devilishly delicious about the taste of fresh cherries, and the season for them to fruit is really short here, and even then they are horribly expensive. Doesn't stop me buying them of course, but if I could capture that flavour in a bean then I'd be a happy girl indeed.
4. If you were on your House’s Quidditch Team, which position would
you preferably play and why?
Chaser, because it's an active role where I wouldn't get bored, and it would also put me in a place where I could see the whole of a game and work in the best way I could to kick the other team's arse help out my team. I think positions like seeker and keeper would remove you too much from the action, and I think beater is a position which would take brute strength and cunning, which I lack rather considerably. Chasers don't have to be especially fast or strong or anything, but they do have to be thinking, team-minded players with fairly good aim. After a few years of playing soccer, I'd hope I'd have at least a fair chance.
5. (Optional) What HP conspiracy theory do you hold true unless it
is textually proven otherwise? (i.e. Snape is a vampire, Ron is
Dumbledore, etc. -there are loads of these theories. Feel free to contribute
your own)?
Hmm...I don't really give much credence to theories. Not that I don't have my own ideas about what is going to happen in the next book or not that I don't enjoy reading what other people think will happen, but some of the theories just get really silly. I'd rather wait and see what J.K herself is going to throw at us next.
6. (Optional. If you can't answer #5, make sure you answer this
one.) What is your favorite book aside from HP and why?
This is a tricky one...my most prized book is a collection of Brother's Grimm fairy tales that I was given when I was baby. However, if I was choosing a book to actually read, it would be Tamora Pierce's new set of books, Trickster's Choice and Trickster's Queen. When I was much younger, I went through a phase of reading only horse books, until I exhausted both my pocket money and the library's collection of them. My librarian was much relieved when I picked up one of Tamora Pierce's books (it had a horse on the cover), and I fell in love with her writing, as well as re-igniting my love of fantasy/historical books. I was about 11 years old then, and ten years later, I still love Tamora Pierce, and the characterisation and storyline in her latest set is beautifully human and complex.
7. What would your Room of Requirement look like?
Apart from it looking exactly like Hagrid's Hut...Firstly, I adore natural textures; wood and stone and wool and iron and whatnot. So my room of requirement would have gorgeous wooden floorboards covered in lush turkish rugs. The walls would be natural stone with wrought iron wall sconces holding lots of brightly lit candles (I love candles too!). The room itself would be large and airy, with a high roof. There would be plenty of comfortable lounges and beanbags for my friend's and I to relax on, as well as some general open space for mock-dueling, practising charms and playing games. There would be a big selection of books, my own personal library, which would be a wall which was a solid bookcase, filled with any book that takes my fancy, as well as room to hold all the little nick-nacks I have collected in my travels. There would also be large windows that open out to the fresh air, and a desk placed underneath one of these so I can get the fresh air and view when I am studying. Some of the walls I would leave bare, but on others I would hang photos of friends, maps of far-away places, charts of random, interesting things and anything else that takes my fancy. There would be big open fireplaces for the colder weather. Lastly, the room would have a staircase leading directly down to a well-stocked tackroom and of course the stables, because my love of horses is a huge part of my life.
8. Describe your wand and tell us why you picked that design.
10.5" jarrah wood, with a core consisting of the forelock hair of a spirited unicorn filly. I love where I live, it's an amazing corner of the world, and it is one of the most isolated. It is home and it is special. The jarrah tree is unique to the area, it is a type of gum that grows in forests. The timber it produces is a gorgeous rich reddish brown with quite a bit of grain. It's a hard tree so my wand would end up being quite inflexible. The local Aboriginals consider jarrah to be one of the first gifts from Mother Earth.
As for the unicorn hair, that represents me. I have always thought of unicorns as being intangible and wild; not like the delicate little pink and white spun-sugar unicorns that adorn little girl's rooms. The unicorns in Harry Potter are more akin to my thinking. They are still healers and still sweet, but they are also wild and spirited, which suits me very well. Sweet natured and adoring, but free-spirited.

What's Your Personality Type? 10. Who is your role model and why?
Eleanor of Aquitaine. She did things her own way :) She was an independant and highly influential woman of her day. She had spunk, she rallied troops and attended by 300 of her ladies, all dressed in armour and carrying, she tended to the wounded in the Second Crusade. She gave patronage to the Arts in her court, and even as her fortunes rose and fall she retained control of her own lands. She was an intelligent and forward-thinking woman.
11. What would you like to have accomplished at the end of your
life?
To have retained my sense of curiosity and wonder in the world and to still have a free spirit. To have taught children and to have made a difference to at least one child's life. To always think the best of everyone, and to always fall in love with the moment when a child finally 'gets' what you have been teaching them, the way their eyes light up is magic, pure and simple. I want to have travelled the world; there is so much I want to see and so much I want to learn. I want to still be close to my friends, I value them more than anything. I want to have a loving partner, children and a menagerie of animals. I want to always try and do the right thing, to always be honest and honourable. I want to have spoken my mind and stood up for what I believed in whenever I needed to. And I want to never stop believing that hope is one of the most important emotions in the world.
12. Would you sooner commit a crime against your kin or your
countrymen?
I would have to say countrymen. As much as I love my country, the people in it are nameless and faceless. My kin on the other hand I know so well, my heart would break if I had to hurt them. My family and friends have always been there for me.
13. What would your animagus be and why?
A wild welsh mountain pony. They are hardy, proud and tractable, which would also be good adjectives to describe myself. Physically, I share the same traits with them of a thick mane, short, strong legs and a small, but athletic build. They flourished in hard environments, even when hunted; I am like that in that I actually do best under adversity. They are spirited and proud, but they are also fantastic children’s ponies. I have done some reading into totem animals and I have always had a strong connection to native ponies.
14. What would your patronus be and why?
This is going to sound like the biggest Gryffindor push, but I can’t think of an animal that feels as right as this one does, so I’m just going to have to say it: lioness. *cringes* Once again, this is my reading into totem animals coming through, but I have always seen lioness as a protector, which is precisely what a patronus is to me. Lionesses are brave and strong and fierce, but this usually stems from their love for their cubs and their devotion to their pride, which seem to be pretty decent reasons to fight to me.
15. What career would you consider if you were indeed part of the
wizarding world and why?
Well, I am a teacher in real life, so I would have to say I’d be the same in the wizarding world - seriously, how damn awesome would it be to teach at Hogwarts anyway?! More sensibly, I love teaching, I love making a difference, and I love the fact that it is never the same thing day-in-day-out. In the wizarding world, I’d love to teach one of the more hands-on subjects; either Charms, Transfiguration or even Defence Against the Dark Arts, if I could hold the job for longer than a year I think it’d be a good one to do. Another subject I wouldn’t mind teaching would be Care of Magical Creatures, but Charms would have to be my first choice.
