LUMOS SORTING APPLICATION

Name: Andrea

Age (13 or up; we stick to LJ rules): 14

Location: Missouri.

Where did you hear about this community? (Please tell us which
lj user recommended you for he/she shall be given a point.)
My dear friend Lumoslight

How much time are you willing to invest in this community? Depending on the effort of others invested I am willing to commit myself to this community. I may be a lurker at first because I don’t like confrontation if avoidable, but eventually I will be my outgoing self.

PART 1 - Canon

1. Have you read all the books? Several times. I started when it first became popular. Around the middle I found it was too commercial, so I stopped for a while to avoid feeding the big business, but I found I was drawn back to them when the next one came out. I still feel it’s a bit too embellished, but that’s retail and I blame nobody but the retail for that.

2. Give us your personal interpretation of each Hogwarts house (in
terms of atmosphere, mentality, intra-house relationships et cetera -
these are just a few examples).

Gryffindor - The sorority/fraternity house. I feel these are the friendly people; the kind that if you were new they’d be the scouts that hunt you out for their social group immediately. But once you got on their bad side they will shun you forever. They aren’t soon to forget and hold grudges against those they distrust. The colors JK made suggest an accepting warmth about it, but still a great pride, maybe not for their heritage but for their personalities. They are confident with who they are and if you have a problem with that you’ll get over it. They feel a slight superiority over the other houses, but not in an arrogant way which they will shove in your face. More in the silent confidence surrounding. The lion suggests that they are leaders, and will lead, no matter whom else is there. They stand up for their beliefs however unconventional their cause. It’s overabundance of leaders and notable past students causes an overshadow for any who lack at certain skills, intimidating them. Many of these ‘inadequate’ hide in the shadow of those greater than them. They are unfairly compared to those whom have extreme skill and never learn to work with what they’ve got because they are afraid of the mocking of others.

Hufflepuff -- The family of the houses. The Hufflepuffs stand together despite what anybody says about them. Many consider them to be unintelligent because they aren’t strong in any one are. I consider them more of a combination of all of the houses. These are the people whom if you were new and you somehow fell in with this group you’d find all sorts of personalities that mix together well to make an accepting clique that is open to all. They are quick to admit mistakes, making others think of them as stupid. They are too wise to let others get to them though. The colors suggest that they are cowards, but I feel that they aren’t allowed to be brave in the first place because they are placed in the house and thus not given a chance to shine. The badger symbolizes their independence as a house. They break off from the others and seem, within their own right, to be loners. I feel they feel inadequate because what they are told throughout their schooling years. As a house they try to shrink into oblivion. Believing something strongly is one of their advantages. They are sure in all decisions, but not afraid to admit when they are in over their head, avoiding confrontation and later backpedaling. They won’t however, force their own opinions on anybody else. They are the people behind the protest that come up with the concept of a wrong in the first place as opposed to the ones whom get out there and attack the problem. Quite the opposite in the sense of the greats though. The skilled in Hufflepuff never are noticed, despite their constant effort. They try hard at what they do, but are never recognized. This kind of negligence will probably lead to them becoming the staple crops of the wizarding world, working in all the simple but necessary jobs because they don’t have the drive or confidence to try for a higher position.

Ravenclaw - The office of the houses. They will stand up for themselves before their ‘coworkers’. They are considered the most intelligent, but they are the most outgoing and emotionally strong of the houses. They won’t give a second thought to any insult flung their way because they themselves know that it’s not true, and anybody else’s opinion of them is unimportant unless it’s something that they can fix. They know nothing worth getting is easy to acquire, so they are somewhat ruthless getting what they want. Maybe not as much as Slytherins, but most certainly in a different way. Instead of bringing others down to make themselves seem better, they tend to build themselves up. I’m not saying they are unkind, more…competitive. The kind that challenges anybody to anything. Having mini-races in the halls and counting wins and losses in Exploding snap. The eagle shows they are proud and feel that they are superior. Looking down at the other houses because of their lack of drive. The colors seem to suggest a mellowness, but I feel differently. I think that inside the Ravenclaw common room the students must be stressed beyond reason, pressured by everybody around them to be the best at all they do, simply because they are expected to be because of the sorting. They aren’t the kind to take out grudges physically though. They tend to more want to throw icy glares and dismissing the problem as something unimportant. If they are in want of something they will look straight ahead to the goal and have a one track mind as long as the goal is out of reach. The greats are recognized and the weaker students are mocked. Any who is not the norm is not acceptable in this house of order and stability.

Slytherin - The ‘A list’ of the Houses. These students don’t make friends, they network. Many because of their parentage. They have a difficult time living up to the demands placed on them because of the expectation placed on them by family and society. They marry not for love but for gain, and consider power to be one of the greatest goals in life. Not that they are unfeeling, no, they are shoved into these situations because they otherwise will live in the shadows and be mocked. Because they are so disliked by the other houses they would be complete outcasts if they were considered nearly average. They must be outstanding to be recognized as a human, much less a Slytherin. Slytherins must have tough skins, else they will never survive the taunts. They are confident or else they will shatter with the stress placed upon them. With the confidence comes an arrogance, a superiority. But what else can be expected from the children that are taught from birth that they are superior to those around them. With fame and fortune comes a lack of free time. Time that should have been spent with family goes to business and damage control. Compensating for the lack of attention, parents fill all children’s wishes. Their defense for the love that they lack in their lives is aggression. They lash out often to instill the fact that they are superior, making the need for love seem less. As they see what they are missing they must lash out more and more, turning them into their parents. The colors show an envy for others. Likely needing love that the others withhold. The symbol shows they will likely do underhanded tasks to get what they want. Manipulating people makes them feel like they have friends, and that radiates a false sense of love, compensating for something so lacked. Respect is the closest they can achieve to love. There are only greats in this house. Anybody less than great attaches to the greats and thrives off their talent or connections.

3. What would be your favourite flavour of Bertie Bott’s Every
Flavour Beans and why (note: as the name implies, all possible flavours
exist)?I would likely consider an Cookie dough ice cream bean to be a great delicacy. Not only is my female side screaming ‘MINE’ but ice cream attacks all senses. The smell is what makes you notice it first. It has a sugary smell that pulls you toward it. The feel of it is wonderful. It’s smooth and slides down your throat with a grace to match any creature. It even looks appetizing. The more it melts, the more I find it irresistible. Obviously it doesn’t give off a sound, but the taste is magnificent. If you look into the science of it there is no question why it is so loved. Ice cream holds something to activate every taste bud on your tongue. Also it give a euphoria that makes one feel perpetually happy. Clearly it is a food created by the gods.

4. If you were on your House’s Quidditch Team, which position would
you preferably play and why? Well…I’m not physically inclined per say…but I would LOVE to be an announcer. I’m not much of a sports fanatic so I might have to learn…a lot. But that’s okay. I’m up to learning. But if I must choose an active position I would be a beater. I think I would excel in that one most because if I try I can be quite strong. A plus would be the free stress reliever. XD But people don’t expect you to be dead serious when you are a beater. And I couldn’t go through the whole game scowling. I can’t go a half an hour scowling. I’m just a happy person. A sarcastic happy person, but a happy person all the same.

5. (Optional) What HP conspiracy theory do you hold true unless it
is textually proven otherwise? (i.e. Snape is a vampire, Ron is
Dumbledore, etc. -there are loads of these theories. Feel free to contribute
your own)? I don’t have any that I am steadfast to, but I love hearing them and considering them. There is two from the new book but they’re spoilers, so I won’t be posting it here. I know I had it spoiled for me, and it quite ruined it. If you’d like to hear it though I am here to talk. Yep…here…to…talk. But I’ve heard some really outlandish ones. And there’s this one about a family relationship between Luna and Myrtle that may be true. I’m not too fannon, but I do enjoy a good ‘cannon connection’, as I have dubbed them.

6. (Optional. If you can't answer #5, make sure you answer this
one.) What is your favorite book aside from HP and why? This is a tough one …majorly. I’d have to go with The Giver because of the social issues it brings up and the concepts it introduces. It’s such a well written piece of science fiction. I love the way the main character progresses from ignorance to intelligence without a superior attitude. If anything, he becomes more sympathetic. Also the way the society works impresses me. The concept behind communism is basically what is established. It shows that the ideas behind it are intelligent, but too much power is distributed unevenly, causing a corrupt government. The protection of the citizens is a show of community censorship. Clearly the book is well thought through. One of the best books of all time, I would say. Maybe I’m biased. XD

7. What would your Room of Requirement look like? Apart from looking exactly like Hagrid’s hut… Isn’t a room of requirement meant to change to your requirements? Well, a universal one for me is somewhere comfy I can curl up and read or draw or write or simply think. I do love people but I also love my solitude. I feel sometimes pressured by others because I am unique in the way I present myself. So sometimes I escape it all and run off to my fantasy world. Of course I’ll have to find a new fantasy world, as the wizarding world has been mine for so long. The rest of Hogwarts will be for socializing but in my sanctuary I will be all alone. Also I would have internet connection because I would simply die without my email and livejournal. I’m thoroughly addicted. XD Mum wishes it weren’t so, but she loses this battle. She’ll win the broccoli war though. Back to the room. The colors would NOT be calm and mellow. I would be able to express myself in the entire room, by décor/art/music. Always there would be music. Any type of music really, so long as it isn’t rap or r&b. I even will (and do) listen to polka. XD

8. Describe your wand and tell us why you picked that design. I don’t know what my wand would be. Something not easily breakable because I have a bad habit of not wanting to clean up my stuff thus making my wand underfoot at all times. It would likely have some boisterous magical component. Out of the Ollivander wands I’m going to have to go with Phoenix. Simply because they seem very social and eccentric animals. Probably hawthorn wood because of the Celtic attributes that are associated with it. If you are unfamiliar with the Celtic Tree Astrology please visit http://www.angelfire.com/realm2/amethystbt/celtictreeastrology.html . Quoted from aforementioned website: “Hawthorn people are mercurial, innovative, creative and confident. Easily bored, they crave mental stimulation and challenge. They are eloquent and gifted performers, exuding natural charm.” I don’t know if I have a gift for it but I am very fond of acting and am most certainly confident. Ask anybody whom knows me personally. I also have a tendency to let my mind wander…especially during math class. XD

What's Your Personality Type?

10. Who do you admire most and why? Well…there are many levels to that question. As a person I most admire my neighbor. She is a very kindly woman that is always giving her time and effort to make other’s lives good. Daily she has 5 children running around her house that she cares for so the parents can work, yet she manages to balance her lifestyle and strict diet because of diabetes. She is the nicest person I’ve ever met and won’t say no despite anything you ask of her. If she has a complication she will feel bad and perhaps change her lifestyle to make your life convenient.

As a role model I admire Mme. Marie Curie. She was a strong woman whom let nobody let her think less of herself because she wasn’t conventional. She devoted her life to her work and is credited to discovering Radium…which was the cause of her death. Her work in radioactivity still effects current medicine. She did things out of the norm of her gender and fought against many whom doubted her because she was a woman. They looked at it as a disability and refused to teach her. Despite all the opposition and all that said she shouldn’t, she taught herself and contributed much to our lives.

11. What would you like to have accomplished at the end of your
life? Gah. That’s a tough one because I have no idea what’s in store for my future. I hope that I will at least be remembered fondly. I don’t want to fade into oblivion, but I don’t particularly want to be known worldwide because then I would not have many close friends. I rely on my friends for my strength. Somehow I perceive them as a metaphor as to how much I am worth as a person. So I’d like to be known in my community for somebody who contributed. I know I should start thinking about what I want to do, but I’m so unsure. I hope however, that there are less tears and more smiles at my funeral, not at my death, but in remembrance. I think a funeral is an occasion for a party reveling in the life of the one whom has passed. But I also think you should be respectful to their wishes. As any should to wishes of celebration. Everybody feels differently about death. But I think it’s just another realm we can discover. Much like the vast expanse of the universe. Unknown. But It’s better that it is that way. Think how dull life would be if we knew everything. Kids would look up at the sky and not say ‘wow…it’s so big’ I don’t think that’s a world I’d like to be a part of…but I digress.

12. Would you sooner commit a crime against your kin or your
countrymen? My countrymen. And it all depends on the crime as well. I have loyalty to both. My family however is important to me. However screwed up they may be. I love them despite their eccentricity. They accept me for mine, it’s the least I could do for them. I may hold a bit of a grudge against my country for it’s economic and environmental views. Please, nobody bash me for this. It’s just I’m not all that patriotic because I don’t agree with things that are happening. I may feel differently if I were living in a different country, but as it is I feel no binds to this country as it is. Of course I won’t blame all the people here for the politics’ problems. So I guess that’s kind of a trick question. I would probably think of all the consequences, see what makes the most logic, and then completely ignore that and go with my gut feeling.

13. What would your animagus be and why? I would be something quirky and unusual. Not something that you see everyday. Maybe one of the endless individual Australian creatures, like a kiwi bird, or a Madagascar aye-aye. Anyway, I would be a social creature, that is somehow not like any other. Standing out, but still being around different species or social groups. I’m not sure what that would be because within each animal group the creatures have their own individual personalities, much like us. They have social status, they have stature. So I guess this question is kind of stuck for me. Disregarding everything I said previously people say I sometimes look like a turtle…though I have no idea where they get that…so…I’ll be a turtle.

14. What would your patronus be and why? Isn’t this a bit like the last one? I guess this is more symbolic to something about you…so I’d have to go with a cat because I’ve always been cat person. I’ve always had cats around me so they are the animal that most affects me. My cat is my child and the sweetest thing you’d ever meet. Again…I ramble. So…seeing as I’ve had little exposure to other animals none have impacted me as much as a cat. So…cat. How many more times do I plan to say ‘cat?’ One. Cat.

15. What career would you consider if you were indeed part of the
wizarding world and why? This is a tough one simply because I don’t know what I want in this life, so I wouldn’t know where to begin in that life. I guess I would want something with animals or plants. Maybe I’d go with something artistic. But I think the mythical animals are the most imaginative and creative things one could ever possibly hope to work for. I’m awfully fond of them, and I’ve always found myself in love with the animals and other races JK introduces throughout the series. I’ve found myself drawing more and more in the ‘Harry Potter world’ style than in the classical. With the mer people the way JK described them. I’m not sure but I’m awfully fond of her look of things. It’s very intelligent.
