While I appreciate the traditional song structure, I just can't get on the Hey Joe bandwagon because the lyrics are, to put it mildly, a bit misogynist. Some juries would still acquit.
I've always just seen it is a particularly good example from the rich tradition of songs written from the point of view of criminals/killers/miscreants. Bruce Springsteen's "Nebraska," where he is writing as Charles Starkweather is my favorite example of this, although Cole Porter's "Miss Otis Regrets" ain't bad either.
