People like fandoms more when the object of their fannish business (either a book, anime, or tv show) is still in progress, or at least releasing new material. When that stops, or the object gets stale, fandoms migrate to newer shows or books.
Sad, but true. I used to be in the Weiss Kreuz fandom, when the dvds were still being released in the U.S., and when the new series, Gluhen, was being released in Japan. I left the fandom for a few months, came back, and it was deeeeead. The communities I followed only have a smattering of updates every now and then.
