[SCENE] [Flashback] Jake and Lana in "My Bloody Valentine"

Feb 14, 2009 22:56

Jake: *February 2014 -- Detective Jake Marshall sits atop Lana's office desk, running his fingers over the transparent glass surface and checking out his reflection* Hmm...You ever stood up on this thing?

Lana: Stood? *Senior Detective Lana Skye laughs lightly in disbelief. She's sitting on her chair at the desk, facing him-- for once, her computer is shut off and no paper files are in sight. She's done with work for the evening, having scheduled this early day off well in advance* No, the windows are right there-- someone in one of the nearby buildings would see. *prudishly, mostly seriously* And it would be quite unprofessional.

Jake: Not even for five, ten seconds? *glides his fingers across* So I can get a nice window view from underneath here.

Lana: *hesitates, seeming to give it some actual consideration*

Lana: ...Five seconds, if you go and dim the lights first. And only because of today.

Jake: *all too quickly gets off and walks over to the light switches. He fiddles with them -- dimming a few of the wrong lights at first -- before finding the one closest to Lana's side of the room. He returns to her desk with an anticipatory smile and crawls underneath to sit on the floor* I'll give you thanks for this after our dinner tonight.

Lana: *smiles, shaking her head. She pushes to her feet and is actually about to hoist herself onto her desk when her cell phone goes off. Quickly, she picks it up from where it's lying on the table and answers it* Hello?

Jake: *sits and stares at Lana, hoping the call is nothing important*

Lana: *looks down through the glass at him as the person on the other end of the line proceeds. A few seconds into it, Lana's expression turns serious and she glances off with a frown. Whoever it is, they go on for quite some time without interruption*

Lana: Alright. 192 Crosby at Jane and Finch. Mm-hmm. Right away. I'll handle things there. Call me if there's any updates. *she's already grabbed her coat from the back of her chair and is heading for the doors*

Jake: *peeks out from under the desk* Hold up, bambina. What's the flusteration?

Lana: *snaps her phone shut* A shooting at a home at Jane and Finch, possible multiple homicide. Damon was apparently chasing the suspect but lost him. He wants me to go secure and investigate the house. *she's already looking entirely focused on this*

Jake: *comes out from beneath the desk, re-adjusting his hat -- he's got an equally serious look on his face* I'm coming with.

Lana: *nods, waiting for him to catch up before heading quickly out the door*

~~~
Lana: *the ride over is spent mostly in silence, both sets of ears tuned to the police dispatch for any news. A touch under ten minutes later, Lana pulls the patrol car to the curb in front of 192 Crosby Street and kills the engine and the siren. She glances to the cowboy beside her before exiting out of the car*
Jake: *steps out of the car and moves towards the house with Lana, past the cops hanging around outside and through the door to get a look at the crime scene*
Lana: *speaks briefly to an officer setting up the police tape before she walks through the door--she stops immediately. A body of a woman is crumpled at the foot of the stairway up to the second floor. It is lying in a pool of blood. There's far too much red staining the carpet of the hall, and on the runner leading up the steps. The only lights on are ones in an adjoining room, barely illuminating the body, so she reaches in her jacket pocket for her miniature flashlight*
Jake: *standing behind Lana, he surveys the scene* Jesus, Mary and Joseph, what happened? She forget to send a greeting card today? *eyes the bits of brain matter and skull fragments stuck to the wall*
Lana: It seems that way. *she doesn't appear particularly bothered by the sight, though her words are crisp and to the point* Could you check the rooms on this floor? He said it's likely there were at least two bodies. I'll head upstairs.
Jake: Yes, ma'am. *moves on to do just that -- it's a fairly nice house, clearly lived in by a happy family if all the photos are to be trusted. He wanders past the dining room and into the kitchen*
Lana: *reaches into her pocket again to retrieve her camera, keeping her hands steady as she focuses her light and takes a photo of the scene. Then she moves upstairs, careful to avoid the bloodstains on the steps. There are signs of a struggle in the hallway--crimson stains on the walls, a painting with a shattered frame on the ground, an overturned side table...*
Jake: *catches sight of the photos stuck on the fridge -- vacation shots of the couple being in love in various cities, some shots with their daughter, some without. It seems like they've been overseas. The final memo on the white board on the freezer door is a reminder from the wife to her husband to make a decision by next weekend on where to go for their upcoming anniversary*
Lana: *glances into the only open door along the hallway, shining in the beam of her flashlight. It's a girl's bedroom, and there's a small form on the bed in the corner. There's also blood and bone splatter on the pillow on the bed, and on the wall on the opposite end of the room. This seems to garner some reaction from Lana-she breathes in sharply, and her hand reaches to her mouth* Jake! *it's loud enough for someone downstairs to hear--not a frantic call, but a strained one*
Jake: *it doesn't take long for him to show up where she is. Upon seeing the sight, he's jarred as well* Had me a bad feeling in my gut as soon as I saw the family photographs...
Lana: She can't be older than six or seven... *sounds visibly shaken as she walks into the room, taking another photo--her hands are considerably less steady this time. Once she's finished she remains standing there, staring* ...There wasn't anyone else downstairs, was there?
Jake: Nope. *glances around, looking at some of the cute, girly decorations -- he doesn't particularly feel like examining the corpse* They find the husband yet?
Lana: That may be who Damon was pursuing in his car. *scans the ground, and kneels down when she finds a bullet casing by a single discarded slipper* White van, 2011 model Ford. The suspect had medium-length dark hair.
Jake: Fits the description right. *looks down at Lana* I'm all-fired confused as to what could drive a man to turn his wife and daughter to buzzard food.
Lana: *puts the casing carefully into a plastic bag, then glances up at him* ...I don't know, either. *frowns, looking towards the body* Her eyes are open. She wasn't asleep when this happened... She must have heard the struggle in the hallway and ran to hide in her bed. *brings her hand up to her mouth again--not out of surprise, but agitation*
Jake: *crouches down, putting his hand on her upper arm* Gant's after 'im with a sharp stick, I'm sure. He'll be settled soon enough.
Lana: *nods slowly, leaning in to his touch. After a moment, she shifts* ...We should call forensics in. *makes no move to actually stand, though*
Jake: *lingers there for another moment and gives Lana's shoulder a light squeeze before he quietly stands up, taking off his hat to smooth back his hair*
Lana: *stands up as well, looking to him--she's about to say something again when her cell phone goes off for the second time that evening. She flips it open and brings it carefully up to her ear* Damon? ...Yes? Oh, good. ....... Oh. I see. I see. So it's confirmed that it was the father, then. Yes. *softly* ...Yes, both the mother and the daughter. No, everything is quiet over here. Detective Marshall is with me. *a slight laugh, in spite of things* ...Yes, Jake then.
Lana: I'll get the investigators in, in just a moment. No, of course I didn't mind--you could hardly have prevented it. *glancing to Jake with a small smile* We don't mind.
Jake: *gives her look of query, pressing a finger-gun to his temple*
Lana: *nods at him, still on the line* Alright. We'll finish up here, and I'll see you tomorrow morning. Yes. Goodnight, Damon. *snaps her phone shut, placing it back in her pocket* ...I suppose that this is a now a fairly open and shut situation.
Jake: *returns the smile* Good to hear it. Gotta say, I have me a case of the blue devils now... *tugs the hat back on and steps out of the room*
Lana: It's the worst part of the job. *there are investigators and officers beside the body at the foot of the stairs; heading down, she speaks with a few and signals them upstairs before walking out of the door with Jake. Once outside, she places a hand on the cowboy's back* Are you alright?
Jake: *exhales lightly* I'm good, baby. *looks to her with a calm expression* You?
Lana: *nods, stroking his back gently* I'm fine. Not the best thing to see, but... it happens. I have to admit that I'm not really in the mood for dinner anymore, though. *glances at her watch* ...And it seems we've lost our reservation, regardless.
Jake: Ain't no matter. *rests his hand on her hip, smiling to her in an attempt to lift the sombre mood* If you'll have me over, we may could watch one of your movies and have a light snack on the couch. How 'bout it, bambina?
Lana: That sounds good, so long as you don't mind Ema being there as well. *leans in and smiles softly, resting her cheek against him* That sounds like a wonderful suggestion, in fact.
Jake: Wouldn't mind a bit. *pulls her in closer, wrapping his arm around her waist* Valentine's is about spendin' time with the folks who have your heart, after all.
Lana: Mm. Happy Valentine's Day, then. *leans up, to give him a light kiss on the lips*
Jake: *grins and returns the kiss* Happy Valentine's Day to you too, ma'am. ...So, what flick are you in the mood for?
Lana: Something topical, perhaps? *steps down from the porch and heads to the patrol car, still holding onto him. Her tone is considerably lighter* Sleepless in Seattle? Love Actually? When Harry Met Sally?
Jake: Uh...which one of those don't got that Meg Ryan in it? *lets go of her only when they reach the car*
Lana: *pauses with her hand on the car door handle* ...... Gone with the Wind? Duel in the Sun?
Jake: That's more like it! *opens the door on the passenger side and climbs in* Bambina, you do love me.
Lana: *shakes her head, laughing lightly as she opens the door on her side and gets in as well* So I do.
