The Apple website should have directions for how to reset it, which usually work, though they are sometimes hard to find.

I've just let the batteries go dead and then when I recharge it usually works. But this was on a 3rd generation one so I don't know about the new ones.

On the 3G, you have to hold the Menu and Play/Pause buttons simultaneously, which is the ctrl+alt+del equivalent. The battery suggestion is also good.

If you have a 4G, toggle the hold button on then off, then cold the menu and the center buttons.
