dilemma: ok, i was planning on waiting till leopard came out to get an imac, however my computer is slowly going--i can just tell. it heats up really really quickly, slows down so it seems like it's frozen and i really can't have much open at a time. i'm worried about my computer completely dying before leopard comes out in october. should i ( Read more... )

yes, but i'm not able to do either of those things for the poor baby and i'm not taking it to a shop and paying an arm and leg for it to be fixed. maybe i'll do it at a later date but i'm extremely protective of my laptop and i'm not shipping it off or anything...

You know, if you replaced laptop with child in that sentence, it would be license for the government to take your child away. They'd be right to do it too.

Are you getting an iMac or a MacBook? Either way, everyone's right. Updating to OSX 10.5 from 10.4 won't be difficult. You'll be able to get the software for under $100 from the computer store, so that should be the least of your concerns. The only concern you might have is that they'll be releasing a hardware upgrade and that you'll pay up front now and find that, two months later, your hardware is worth considerably less. It's the gamble you always play.

If you really need it, go for it. I'd wait for the next MacBook or iMac or whatever you're buying release and then move forward from there, but, either way, it doesn't really matter and, again, it's your call. Good luck!

I honestly don't know. It's been a bit over a year since an iMac re-release, I believe, so it should be, most likely, relatively soon. With the WWDC coming up in June, you'll probably hear of a new release in the coming months, but don't quote me on that. Long story short, it'll probably be a little bit, but not too long. I seriously doubt your laptop will "die;" it just needs some taking care of. Ask a friend in town to clean out the fans, filters, and vents to make sure it's keeping cool - it shouldn't be overheating. If you're having slowdown problems, delete some stuff from the harddrive and reinstall the OS. It won't cost very much and it'll speed things up considerably. If there were real hardware problems, you'd know it by now because you'd have severe issues with your computer aside from a slowdown and heat problems such as constant blue screens of death and the OS actually freezing (not the spinny ball forever freezing, but ACTUALLY freezing, mouse included). You're honestly better off waiting a little bit 'til you ( ... )
