Gonna work on catching this up. Slowly. As in whenever I can do a post or two. BECAUSE I AM AWESOME AT FALLING BEHIND.

Day 11 - A book that disappointed you.

I read a lot of Lackey. It's fluff reading, for me. Easy, straight forward characters, a little bit of gay in every book. They're fun reads, they're not challenging, and they're easy to use to just shut up the brain for a bit.

I liked the first book of this series, Owl Flight, a lot. It's a fun read, everything I want out of Lackey, and has owls, as one can probably guess. And a griffin! And a nice mix of relationship building and action as a young boy, Darian, must work with the mysterious Hawk Brothers to save his village when barbarians attack.

Unfortunately, the rest of the trilogy... all I can say is that it disappointed me. It's not BAD, it's just not that good.

For the second book, I think Lackey spends too much time developing her world and characters and then at the last moment, remembers she needs some plot and throws another barbarian invasion at us. Only it's not REALLY an invasion because this is Lackey and the moral of the story is that no one is all bad and everyone can live together with candy and rainbows. And owls. And psychic antelopes.

And the third book... completely fails at any believable tension between characters with the exception of one scene that is quickly resolved with sisterly love.

I think the problem is less with Lackey and more with me in this case. It's not like Lackey broke her normal pattern. But the books are basically a bedtime story about how everyone can get along and aren't all that different, whether they're normal fantasy-European culture mash, native American-fantasy hybrid that Meg sees as vikings even if they aren't, gay hippy nature loving Native America fantasy hybrid, or psychic antelopes. And sometimes, that just isn't the book a girl is looking for.

Possibly it's also because I just don't give a damn about Keisha, the grounded-but-feisty heroine of this series. Too much time is spent to develop her character in book two and then her relationship with Darian does not actually interest me. Again, it kind of goes back to a lack of tension between the characters, other than some commitment issues. Which are resolved. Without any actual fighting. Because of twu luv. Well, and Darian having his head too far up his quest to notice anything else.
