When you log in, there's a counter on the very top that should start with 0. You put in the number of words you've written into that.
For most of Nano, you track your words yourself. In the last week or, they open up the ability for you to submit your actual words and that's how they verify that you've actually done 50k rather than just SAID you did. But they start out with just self reporting to reduce the server stress.
