Summary : Jessica knows.

He doesn’t recognize her.

Why would he, though? Puberty had been extremely kind to Jessica Moore, and hardly resembled tall, geeky girl that the Winchesters had helped rescue from a ghoul eight years ago. Regular beauty treatments kept her hair untangled and shiny, her body was now enhanced with curves that attracted whistles from frat boys, and she’d abandoned the coke bottle glasses for contacts years ago.

Sam hasn’t changed as much on the outside. He is taller now, much taller, and his voice is now deeper and richer. Sam still has that smile, the smile that had made her blush and stare at her LA Gear high tops all the way on the ride home. As the Winchesters returned Jess to her parents after her kidnapping, Sam had babbled the whole way home, talking about cartoons of all things, rhapsodising over Scooby Doo. Eventually Sam’s father and older brother had joined in on the discussion; and Jess was amazed that Winchesters could fight scary things like they did, and then be able to laugh about it afterwards.

Eight years ago, Jess had been the shy and awkward one, barely able to say goodbye to Sam as the Winchesters left her house. In College, Sam is the awkward one. His eyes grow wide when she sat down beside him and starts to make idle chit chat on the first day of Freshman Biology. Jess is the one who asked him to be her study buddy, and she’s the one who leaned across the table in the library and initiated their first kiss.

Time passes, and they fall in love. Eventually they move in together, in charming little apartment, not too far from campus.

He still doesn’t recognize her.

Sam doesn’t talk about his family, other than an idle word here or there. His silence speaks volumes, and it isn’t hard for Jessica to figure out that Sam has left the world of ghostbusting behind, possibly for good.

It would be so easy to tell Sam that she knows. But Jess doesn’t tell him, at first because she’s afraid that she’ll scare him away; and later, because she’s waiting for the day he decides to trust her, past be damned.

When Dean breaks into their apartment in the middle of the night, she thinks that day may be dawning.

Sam walks out the door carrying a duffel bag. He stops to give her a kiss, and promises to be back soon. Jess tries to pretend that she doesn’t quite understand what’s happening, but she can tell. Sam and Dean are going on a mission together, to save someone or battle something.

As the Impala drives away, Jess wishes she would have told him the truth.

An uneasy feeling in her gut tells her that she’ll never see Sam again.
