I am surprised that people celebrate this holiday outside of TX. I thought it was local. My home town is just down the beach from Galveston, so there it's a big deal.
It made headlines in papers here in NYC and Binghamton and Syracuse. And I saw online it was in the MSN national headlines. It seems to be a pretty widely celebrated holiday outside of TX. In TX, it is an official state holiday.
It's June 19th 1865. A boat landed at Galveston bringing news that the slaves were free. TX was still occupied by the Confederate Army until that time, so word never got through. Now it is a general emancipation holiday, but in the town where I am from, the city has a festival and everyone celebrates. It's kind of like a mini July 4th.
Wow, that's pretty neat. I wish they had something like that here, but even though we're north of the Mason-Dixon line this might as well be a Confederate state. :(
