Harry Potter LexiconWikipediaHarry Potter Wiki Personality: Luna initially comes across as slightly (or more than slightly) off her rocker, but under her airy surface she's a strong, solid, and dependable person who just has a different way of seeing things than the rest of the world. She shares the views of her father, the editor of the Quibbler, and believes in many conspiracies and creatures that simply don't exist in the real world. Such belief can be seen either as a sign of her open mind or of her brain being slightly off-kilter; until becoming friends with Harry and the rest in her fourth year, she was treated universally as slightly mad, with other students giving her the nickname "Loony" very early on.
But one of the best things about Luna is that she is very self-possessed. She was lonely, without friends, but she was too comfortable and happy with how she was to earn friends through false methods. She marches to her own drum (or perhaps a pan pipe), and won't deviate. The friends she has now she gained through adversity and trial, and she values each and every one of them as more precious than any riches in the world. Still slightly unused to the idea of having friends, she will help them through anything, and suffer any punishment received for doing so.
She has a knack for detecting moods in others and is embarrassingly honest at many times, never holding back her opinions. That honesty can make her proclaim her beliefs for half the dining hall to hear and snicker at, but it can also help her say what needs to be said in a situation and provide comfort to people by not dancing around sensitive subjects. She's the only one able to make Harry feel better after the death of Sirius, simply by saying what she believes and not treating him as if he was going to break.
As a Ravenclaw, Luna is very intelligent, though in contrast to Hermione her intelligence seems to be founded mainly on intuition and emotional - almost empathic - understanding. She can make connections between events or items quickly and easily (sometimes too easily, leading her to believe some of the stories in the Quibbler) and remember information for a long time. She doesn't have to study as much as many others do as she seems to somehow just absorb the information - no one can tell how - and managed OWLs in all but one of her classes, all but one of those being an O or an E. She's talented in Charms, Divination, Care of Magical Creatures, and (thanks to Harry) Defense Against the Dark Arts, a little above average in Transfiguration and Ancient Runes, and is a fairly abysmal potions maker.
Internally, she has a spirit of iron, one that won't bow or break under adversity. In many ways she's an honorary Griffindor, as all her closest friends belong to Godric's house and she's shown bravery equal to theirs in several situations, bravery acknowledged even by Ron. She stands firm in her beliefs and remarkably shows no one any ill-will for what anyone says or believes about her, putting up with them taking her possessions year after year and simply asking for their return before she takes her leave for the summer. She also joins in the fight against Voldemort with that same conviction at the very young age of fourteen and never wavers in her dedication to it, reviving the DA under the noses of the Death Eaters with Neville and Ginny and performing as many subversive acts as they can within the school.
Luna has quite an artistic bent and is a talented painter; she painted realistic portraits of her five friends on her bedroom ceiling. She enjoys Muggle arts and crafts, and will not perform them using magic. She makes her own jewelry and some of her own clothes and sketches in class many times when she should be taking notes.
Strengths: She can accept the situations she finds herself in and handles herself better in tough scrapes than many - or pretty much all of - her friends. She has no temper to lose, and so far hasn't been shown to panic even in bad circumstances. It gives the people around her a level of reassurance when they know that one person, at least, can still think and act, leading to a solution quicker.
She will not abandon a friend in need, even if they aren't with her at the time. Her loyalty to Harry never wavers, and she's willing to forgive him leaving her and Neville on the train if it will make him happy. She's a great source of comfort for those who take (or are forced to) spend a fair amount of time around her, once they can see to her real personality beyond the funny ideas.
Her roundabout thinking can produce unusual but perfectly workable solutions to problems that seem to have no solution. She's also a very adept witch, having inherited her mother's brilliance, but not her love of experimentation. She can produce a full, very effective patronus that takes the form of a hare.
Weaknesses: At this point in time, Luna is still far too prone to believing in odd stories and things her father tells her, blinding her to an extent to the world around her. If her father says something, it must be true, and over the years he's said quite a lot of things to her. Now that some of her beliefs (including believing Harry from the get-go in her fourth year) have been found to be correct, she's holding on to the rest just as hard as she can, certain they'll be validated some day. It's not so much that she doesn't see things, but rather that she sees too much, and some of what she sees isn't true.
Her honestly has gotten her in trouble quite a lot over her lifetime, as it was honesty about her beliefs that separated her from her schoolmates for three years. She is also painfully blunt and sees no reason to stop it, leading most people to have to spend a long time getting used to her before they see the good qualities that the more obvious "quirky" ones overtake in the public eye.
While she is mentally and spiritually strong, her physical strength leaves something to be lacking. She wouldn't last a minute in a physical fight; about the only thing she's good at in a sports situation is running, and even then she's not the best. She does have a certain hardiness about her so she's never permanently damaged, but that's at least partially because of magical healing and the opportunities it offers.

First Person: I find it hard to believe this is where I was meant to be. I rather think the Death Eaters had intended me for Azkaban; to find myself in a forest is quite nice. Sadly it looks as though there aren't any sneazles about, or perhaps I could have some tea. Some of those jinxes were rather nasty; one of them caused me to break out in small tentacles before I could perform the countercharm.
I would like to know where my wand has gone, though, and my earrings, as I can't see them anywhere. This dress is nice, but it does seem a little cool at the moment, so a scarf or some mittens would be good for nightfall. Does it come early, here?
It's sad that I won't be able to see Ginny and Neville for some time, now that the Death Eaters have me. We had such good plans in store for the rest of the year, and it was exciting to see Neville stand up to the Carrows like he did. Perhaps we would have even gotten the sword, in time, since it is meant for Harry. It's too bad Scrimgeour wouldn't let him have it when he should have, but considering how involved he was in the Malady of the Month intrigue, it's really not surprising. But we have to help Harry however we can, and so now I need to find my way out of this forest the Death Eaters have conjured.
Third Person: A new arrival sat on the ground beneath a tree, legs folded under her and a stick in her hand, sketching idly in the dirt. The journal lay on the ground beside her, open and apparently discarded. "I wish I had a quill, I know I had two in my bag." Where, exactly, her bag was, though, she didn't know. But surely it had to be somewhere around. "It was almost exciting when they stopped the train - not knowing that I'd be taken, but knowing that we'd made them so angry. Dad has been doing very well, hasn't he?"
She brushed some of her blonde hair out of the way and reached back to run her hand over the wings, curious about them. "I do like the wings. It would be more fun if they were capable of flight, but I suppose they're too small." Whatever she was sketching in the dirt gained a vague pair of wings of its own, long slashing lines coming from the area of its shoulders. It was starting to look more horselike as well. "Flying with a broom is certainly fun, but I think I would enjoy flying under my own power. I suppose it can't be helped."
A spiraling horn was added a few seconds later, and the image of a Pegasus sat rough but identifiable on the ground. Luna watched it for a moment, tilting her head and staring at it, before blinking and pushing herself to her feet. "I suppose I should go see about finding out where I am and what's going to happen to me. They must have left some sort of guard around to prevent me from escaping; if I keep walking, I'm likely to run into them at some point. Perhaps they'll even have my wand and I can retrieve it from them, though that's probably unlikely. But at the moment any wand would do. Best get started, then."
And she threw away the stick, picking up the book as well, and started off in a random direction. Something would turn up, eventually.
