A Game of Thrones

I finished reading A Game of Thrones by George R. R. Martin last night and have already moved on to the next book in the Song of Ice and Fire Series, A Clash of Kings. The book is 800+ pages so it took a while to get through. The first part of the book took more time to get through since there are loads of characters and getting the lay of the ( Read more... )

And don't for any answers anytime soon to those questions. I think Sandor Clegane is the Snape of the series but one scary thing in Martin is that any character is fair game. The wrong people die all the time.

He spares no one, the guy is brutal with a pen. Are you saying I won't get answers to those questions or just not soon?

Interesting point on Sandor Clegane, I will have to pay attention there. There is so much to keep track of in the beginning. I definitely found the online encyclopedia helpful.

I have difficulty reading fantasy series with huge numbers of characters. I tend to forget who everyone is and then get frustrated, but this series has been recommended so many times that I should really just read it.
Though your comment about using the online encyclopedia makes me wary...

It's really good, don't let anything I say throw you. I think the good part is that even while you don't feel sure of everyone it is very interesting. You don't have trouble getting the main characters who are driving the story, it's more a matter of wanting to make connections to a lot of the names in the background. It's nice that the encyclopedia is there if you want it though.

Ok, that makes me feel better.
I'll get on it as soon as I read the 20some books I got for Christmas. =)

I've just bought the first two books of this series on Aredwitch's recommendation with bookstore gift card along with a few others...lol. Need to retire from work so I have time to read. I'm knocking off a couple of small books before I get involved in a saga - can't wait.

As for using an online encyclopedia, I'll be going there as I at times have trouble getting things straight. Lots of times I would go to the HP Lexicon to have a character explained to me. Took me a few readings to get wandlore too.

Ooh good I can't wait till you start it. The encyclopedia is very good about keeping spoilers covered too which after a certain point in a series you wouldn't think would be the case.

Tower of the Hand is an awesome site, isn't it?! That guy has put a lot of thought and work in to it and all by himself it looks like. As for your question, "Are you saying I won't get answers to those questions or just not soon?" That depends on if Martin ever finishes the series. I am hoping with the series being turned into an HBO program it might put pressure on Martin to turn the tv off and finish it. Some of your questions will be answered sooner or later cause, with the size of the books, things do get resolved occasionally. More than that I don't want to say since I don't want to spoil it for you.
Once you get finished with the books and you want to start guessing how it ends. Westeros has a very nice collection of author quotes. LOL I know you are thinking NOOOOO! Not that again!! Martin doesn't get interview nearly as much as Rowling and even in HP symbols really didn't mean much in the end so you don't get sucked in as deep.

Tower of the Hand is an excellent resource. I am amazed by the work put into that. It really gives you a feel for what the online Lexicon was for people reading HP too. I wasn't really online until DH so I didn't see all that. It's nice that Martin really appears to see the value in it because it certainly does give value to his series.

I see what you mean about Martin turning off the TV. I friended him on LJ yesterday and noticed he had three posts selling books. His older posts are at least half football. The eagles and Giants are playing this weekend so I guess there will be a post about that too. I wouldn't be surprised if the 5th book gets released around the time the HBO series debuts. I bet he'll capitalize on that publicity. Of course after that who knows how long it will take to get the next one. I think it would be fun though to guess at the ending after having read these four. I missed all that with HP and there is loads in this series to talk about.

So, I just saw on HPN that Amazon is taking A Dance With Dragons preorders. It is supposed to be released October 27, 2009.

That date has been changed a few times. He announced last fall that it was almost done and the cover was ready. Since then the date keeps getting pushed back.

Yes, someone pointed that out over there too, after I got all excited and posted this here. So I guess we'll just have to wait and see hoping someone shuts down his cable television in the mean time.
