16th Oath of Moment: Salvation's Reach

[ Action one: Park ] [ Garviel is sitting in the park, reading a few books. In this case, some comic books that he got from the comic store. He looks slightly annoyed by them, as near as you can tell for a nearly 9 foot tall giant in powered armor. ]
That just doesn't seem reasonable at all....

[ Action Two 2237 Stevens and the surrounding ( Read more... )

[ Look who's stopping by. And, by this point, it's just in time to watch the leaves burn. ] Yard work, Garviel? [ Might be a tiny bit amused at seeing such a HUGE GUY handling a thin rake. ]

[ Okay, that's not ominous at all. ] I don't see how tea's going to help, but alright. [ Following the man's lead. ] You could leave off the "mortal" part, though. I don't need the obvious reminders.

[ He will gesture to a couch, and begin brewing tea, bringing out some rather tasteless cookies first. At least he tries. ]
I'm just being precise, there is no insult intended. If I was a man given to envy, I might envy you.

There's nothing special about being an ordinary Japanese high school student. [ Touma isn't exactly hungry, but he tries one all the same.

...just one, though. ] --it's just not the most sensitive way to put it.

[ Garviel comes back with tea, which isn't so bad. He's practicing. ]

So you say... now, as for the drones... I think they are actually used by the town as a power source. Sometimes the drones disappear, or just fade into generic ones, instead of the people we knew. At that point.... they get brought into the dairy to be connected to some strange, eldritch generator.

Wait, you mean like some kind of walking bioelectric batteries? [ Touma seems to be giving this a lot of (morbid) consideration. ] If that was true, why would they bother keeping us "awake"?

Because only those that have degenerated to a certain point become drones, and thus usable by the system. Also... I think in a strange way the town's masters awnt to protect us. Or at least make us accept things here.

...protect us. Right. [ Pardon the look. ] Are you and I living in the same messed up town, here, or are things different on this side of Mayfield?

No, they are the same. ... You are unfamiliar with the world that we have been show, outside of Mayfield, aren't you?
[ The massive Marine sighs. ] Don't misunderstand me. I do not wish to be here, and I think this form of "protection" the masters of this town offer is an awful thing, but I think they believe they are keeping us from a worse existence.

Tell me, have you ever heard of Westport?

[ Normally Touma might dodge a question like that, but it's obvious that Garviel was talking about something related to Mayfield, so he can easily admit his ignorance. ] Nope. Never heard of it.

It is another town in this world, utterly devastated by war. I've been there.

From what I can tell... Mayfield is one of the last few islands of relative stability in a world that is mostly dead.

.... In some ways, rather like Istvaan III, where I was trapped for quite some time, but that is another story.

[ That makes him pause because, well, hearing about that kind of devastation is not easy. His hands curl into tight fists, and it's good he wasn't holding anything at the time.

Still, there's an edge to his voice, not directed at whatever force might have terrorized the land, but that holds them captive here. ] That's unthinkable. It's terrible, there's no doubt about that... but why us? Why not just come out and say "hey, we brought you here to help us rebuild this land" or whatever their big plan is? They can't let go of their pride long enough for that?!

... I can't say I understand that much of their intent, despite being here almost a year. The Masters of this place seem quite inscrutable to me.

Still, we will fight back, and I've just been weighing a plan to do so. A symbol, if you will.
