How is anyone supposed to learn English from a book like this?

That does sound like it would be quite difficult. Perhaps you could find something more suitable?

Mm, it would be nice. Unfortunately, this is the book Sensei is teaching with. I guess it's because it's the book with the most copies.

Whatever kind of people lived here before we did certainly liked their pasta.

Are you aware of what you were just reading?

...Not really. Something about pasta, I take it.

How to make pasta.

[I suppose that was something I should have known, what with this book being called '100 Way to Make Pasta' and all...]

Is this really going to help me with my English?

Yes; it's not the traditional way of learning, but it is a conventional way. If you ever do visit an English speaking country, you will be able to cook and feed yourself properly.

But I'm.... Japanese. I know how to cook rice and pasta already.

[TRYING TO FIND THE GOOD HERE]

Well, I suppose I'll know what the ingredients are called in English, at least.

It was instructions on how to cook pasta. It was also explaining sodium levels and how much is recommended to eat in a day. I've never heard something so silly, salt is salt, use it to taste, why measure it so precisely?

But to cook pasta you just boil it in water. Why does this recipe go on for pages?!

kan_chyan November 27 2009, 19:58:57 UTC
Don't ask me. Maybe someone decided making it complicated made it better?

But why are you reading a recipe book in English if you don't know English enough to understand what it's saying?

I'm practicing English for Sensei's class. I understood a little, but when it started getting into measurements -- that's when it started going over my head.

That's not how you cook pasta, it's too scientific. Cooking comes from the heart!

It's even more scientific-sounding when it's in a language you're not fluent in.

skybound_love November 27 2009, 23:27:09 UTC
I can teach you how to do it more naturally.

I'd really appreciate that.
