That's an excellent step you're taking, to get help - there's a huge stigma around it but there's no shame in it. I found having someone to talk to who knew what they were doing did worlds of good for me.
Anti-depression medicine can take a while to get used to as well, so don't be discouraged if yours doesn't work immediately - I was on Zoloft for a while and it wasn't the one that eventually worked, but everyone's reactions are different.
Like davidn, everyone is different so there can be some accommodation and adjustment periods to get the exact right dosage of the exact right medication you need figured out, so please don't get discouraged if things don't seem to happen overnight!
That being said, I understand that things are basically at the breaking point and I'm sorry it came to that, but I'm really proud of you for taking that step to save yourself. It sounds like it's sorely needed, and you're doing the right thing to clear the path for you to be truly happy again, which you deserve to be.
Best of luck, and as always, count me in on the list of people who are here if you need to talk, yeah?

Do check for physical problems as well if you can (I assume your GP has already gone over this since you have an actual healthcare system, or at least what's left of one). Things like sleep apnea or digestive wonkiness can leave your neurons without the right chemicals to do their job right. OvO
