I got an owl from Prof. Sinistra. She's invited me to come study and work as her assistant for several weeks ( Read more... )

Well, if you loathe it, then accepting... would sort of be a waste of time, right? Summer is a time for pursuing one's own interests, with apprenticeships and the like. I don't see how it would be selfish of you to decline at all! If you hate astronomy then chances are you won't be actively seeking out an astronomy-related career, right? Thusly you won't be using the information you gather very much later in life (this is just an assumption.) so for you to go knowing full well you wouldn't be using the info later on, then it would be wasting her time.

Sorry, rambling.

Yes, you have a great point, but... Career-wise, I really can't say. I mean, it is a possibility - even though I dislike it. Sinistra already knows my opinion on it. She has since the beginning of the year, but her opinion has been (and, obviously, still is) that a) my reasons for disliking it are somewhat spurious and could be overcome with practice and experience, b) it's a shame for me to write it off without more of an attempt, and c) she's never seen a student so innately talented, and it's a shame for me to waste that talent. She's also under the opinion that it was something near to criminal for the past Astronomy professor to allow me to neglect it so, and is generally rather put out that Lupin (the professor, that is) neglected his obvious talents in the same field without more disciplined of an attempt to overcome his distaste for the field...

(No worries, I'm rambling far worse. And thank you for listening, and your advice, by the way.)

You have a point too. It would be a dreadful shame to turn it down when there's the chance it could be a wonderful experiance. Is this apprencticeship of sorts for the rest of the summer? Because if you'd still have free-time to do what you liked, then you could have the best of both worlds.

(Well, we two seem to be inclined towards rambling, I don't think there's any harm in it really.)

My advice would be to give it a try. Even though you dislike the subject, you might enjoy whatever practical sort of work Professor Sinistra has in mind. I never liked Astronomy very much either, but who knows what might happen when you're actually working at it properly? It's an opportunity. And if you hate it - you can always leave.

I agree with Rita- give it a go, and if you hate it you can always stop. Who knows, you might actually enjoy yourself, and you can get away from all the bickering here.

You have no idea how lucky you are - I would love to do that all summer. Not that having everyone over here is bad or anything, but I would love to be doing what you’ve been offered.

Astronomy is probably my second least favourite subject. It sucked in fifth year, it sucked more in sixth year and it’s probably going to suck even more in seventh. I’d keep away from the Tower permanently if I didn’t have to go there for classes, but if you want to do it (which it sounds a lot like you don’t) then I ‘spose it wouldn’t be that bad. But if you’re sane and are of the opinion that Astronomy is the bane of your existence or close to it, then I’d avoid it like the plague.
