I enjoy a good walk at Radnor Lake, a nice state park here in Nashville, from time to time. While strolling down one path, a sign posted made me chuckle. I met a guy here who tries not to buy anything that has been imported, because of the fumes from the vehicles that transport things...I would have never thought of that as a way to protect the environment...he is an ecology/history major. I don't know that idea wouldn't have just as many negative repurcussions if everyone did it, but it shows that there are people who actually take measures to help the environment. Protecting the environment is a big deal here...there are huge public recycling bins on every other block, and signs advertising various ways to help. And it seems like people take them just a little bit more seriously than in the states...where nearly no one does. I think we are in the first era where we humans are in a position to even view nature as 'fragile'. The views of the past have always seen nature as a force to be conquered - dangerous and unpredictable. But now that we Westerners have most of our countries developed and comfortable, we can see nature as a cooperater and even how necessary it is for our ( ... )
