Hawaii!?

So I've been so-so satisfied at work lately.. I do like what I'm doing, but I also often get the feeling that while I could fix a lot of the things I see as being wrong, I don't see myself being given the power to do so. I feel good about the low level management of my company, but I have no faith in the upper levels. This combined with the fact ( Read more... )

I agree - it sounds like a really fun adventure! And if you were really homesick after a year or two, there's no reason you couldn't make another job change and move back to the continental states.

The only thing I'd be concerned about is that the salary adequately compensates for the increased cost of living and the fact that you'll be doing lots of flying home.

And as for the top of the volcano being cold and snowy, it is really cold, but it's also really dry so there's not a whole lot of snow, plus if I recall correctly the summit of Mauna Kea is only about an hours drive from very lovely warm beaches.

true.. I know I can always come back.. Part of that equation is how much of my life I'd want to bring with me. The company would pay to relocate me, but if I bring all my stuff, I'd have to pay to get it home, or find another company with relocation, though that option probably wouldn't get me back to my own house ( ... )

Yeah, I'm looking at it as an adventure. I'm certainly not ready to say I'm going to spend the rest of my life there. But 3-5 years I could see myself doing pretty easily.

Kids are a factor to think about.. Having kids down there would be awful hard on the grandparents, not to mention not having people to help us out.

Sounds like an amazing oppurtunity! I think it would definitely be worth it. I don't know if you have ever been to Hawaii, but apparently tons of people try to get jobs and move there (It is basically paradise)...and there aren't that many jobs so often times college-educated people end up working in agriculture.

My experience with people stations in Hawaii either loved it or hated it. No one thinks its just okay. Those who love it, love the weather and more laid back island lifestyle. Those who hate it... well, everyone has covered those. Expenses, distance home, and island fever. Once you've done everything you would want to do on the island you're kind of stuck there. The schools also suck (something for Heather to think about).

Personally, if I was offered that kind of opportunity I would take it. Even if you only did it for a few years, it would be worth the experience. Twenty years from now, you would regret not taking this job because it sounds awesome. I'd probably come back to the mainland after a few years, but who knows, you might prefer it out there.

That's basically how I feel.. I think it'd be a great experience, but I'd probably want to come back eventually.

Heather's the one who encouraged me to apply, so she's on board with the idea, with the same apprehensions I have. Interestingly, there's a recruiter from the HI schools coming to Albany next month, so maybe that's a sign...
