Fight or Flight

On some level, when he was little, Reid was achingly aware of his fight or flight instinct. Not that he consciously knew what was going on with him when the possibility of being punched in the gut or being shoved into a locker presented itself in the form of Billy Cramer or Calvin Hays, but his accelerated heartbeat, shortness of breath and instant paling were dead giveaways. And as much as he tried to get his reaction under control, after a while he had to concede that just wishing it away didn’t work the way he wanted it to. So in the end, he resorted to one of the things he did best and just ran - bullies calling him a wimp be damned.

As time went on, he became more comfortable in his own body and mind. Being the best in his class at virtually everything gave him an ego boost, and even if everyone else insisted that chess was lame, they seemed grudgingly impressed that Reid beat opponents that were five years older than him on a regular basis. Just wonderful. I love when authors do such a great job in giving Reid a history and explaining how they inform who he is today. I love that even this early on, Reid knows that Luke is different and important.

Aww, thank you so much! I'll admit I've been kind of obsessed with Reid's past and have many dueling theories about it in my head, so it makes me very happy that this one worked for you. :)
And yeah, poor Reid didn't stand a chance, huh?

I like the choices he's made in the past, but especially the one he made when he met Luke. He definitely wasn't going anywhere.

Of course, all of that changed abruptly when a brat named Luke Snyder came into his life. He didn’t know what it was about him, but Luke just triggered all of his instincts at the same time.

Hee, Reid's a smart cookie. Even running scared is a good choice sometimes - but obviously, there was no escaping Oakdale's clutches. ;)
