Luke & Reid Drabble-a-thon and just over the word count. Unbetaed. Enjoy.
There were tears in her eyes, and before Reid knew it, Katie had flung herself into his arms. He was too stunted to do anything other than pat her shoulder.
Reid looked to Luke for help, but Luke was staring blankly at the door opposite to him. Reid glanced at the door to figure out what Luke found so damn interesting, but it was just a door.
Seemingly on his own, Reid patted a little harder. “There, there. Come on Katie, don’t cry. This sweater’s dry clean only.”
Katie pulled back and gave him a watery smile and wiped away her tears. “I’m sorry, I just want this to happen so badly, and I’d hoped me and Chris…but that’s over. Look, you don’t have to answer now; I know it’s a big decision.” She let go of Reid, and perched herself on the edge of the couch to place a hand on Luke’s knee. Luke doesn’t flinch but Reid could tell he wanted to; he had stopped breathing and his jaw went tight. “You two talk it over and let me know, okay?”
With that Katie got up, grabbed her coat, and walked out the door.
He waited for Luke to say something. Reid sighed and looked at Luke, but he was still staring at the door Katie just walked through. Reid waited some more, but still nothing. The moments dragged, and the fingers of his left hand started to tap faster as the tension in the room went up.
Finally, Reid couldn’t take it any longer and started with, “Crazy night, huh?” Luke was silently seething, so Reid went on. “First, the waiter at Al’s gets our orders wrong. Your mom hugged me, which, you know…weird. And now, Katie wants me to be the father of her next child. Cray-zee night.” He ended the statement with a low whistle.
Luke was out of his chair faster than Reid could blink, and with enough force to send the chair sliding into the kitchen. Luke’s face was wild and, instinctually, Reid pulled his feet up from underneath the coffee table; a good thing too because Luke had grabbed onto the edge and flipped it over onto its top. “Un-fucking-believable! To come in here?! That bitch has lost her fucking MIND!”
Reid was frozen with his knees tucked near his stomach, and hands up, palms out to protect his face. He had seen ‘Pissy Luke’ and ‘Bitchy Luke’. On a few occasions he’d met ‘Angry Luke’, and he’d be the first to admit that Luke was a turn on, but this Luke… This Luke frightened him.
Voice finally found, Reid croaked out, “Whoa, Luke, whoa!”
Reid immediately wished he hadn’t said anything. Luke’s head swiveled around and his gaze was filled with rage. “You! You just sat there and said nothing!”
“Luke…”
“Or maybe, secretly, you like the idea? Keep Katie as a backup plan, incase Luke can’t pull through? Why didn’t you say anything?” The rage leaked out from Luke’s face and voice, leaving him looking and sounding broken.
Reid closed his eyes for a moment then stood up and pulled Luke forward into his arms. “No, Luke…I didn’t know what to say. I was just as blindsided as you were.”
Luke sniffed into his shoulder. “I makes sense though, doesn’t it? You love, Jacob. Jacob loves you. He calls you papa, Reid.”
“I do love him, but Luke, he calls you ‘papa’ too; and Henry.” Reid knew he should have put a stop to it when Jacob started, but it had drove Chris crazy so he didn’t push too hard. “I do not want to be Katie’s baby daddy.”
Luke pulled back and Reid cupped his face. “We’re two guys. You work too much. I’m an alcoholic and,” Luke pulled one of Reid’s hands from his face and moved it to cover where his transplant scar was. “Because of this we’re no closer than we were a year ago.”
Reid squeezed Luke’s side and pulled him back into a hug. “Adoption’s not the only option, Luke. If you want, we can start looking for a surrogate again. I swear Luke; I’ll move the heaven I don’t believe in, and the ground that I do, to find a way to complete our family.”
Luke laughed into his neck and took a step back. “You’re giving me a pep talk? Jeez, we must be doomed.”
“Don’t be an ass.” He cuffed Luke on the head and smiled.
Luke was smiling but his face still conveyed sadness. “She turned us down. She turned us down, then turns around and wants the same things? Christ, she must have a set on her.”
Reid giggled. “I’m pretty sure she collects them from each of her husbands’; must have been a huge disappointment when she married Chris.”
Luke pressed his lips together and turned his head, trying not to laugh, but it was futile. “Stop. I’m pissed, and I’d like to hold onto that if I could.”
Reid grabbed him by the head and pulled Luke in for a quick, hard kiss. “Let’s go then.”
“Where are we going?”
“Katie’s.” Reid pulled their jackets from the closet and threw Luke his. “We’re going to Katie and we’re going to tell her off!”
“Reid…”
“No!” It was his turn for anger. “You’re right. I understand her turning us down, it was a lot to ask, but to come here…It’s like a slap in the fucking face, Luke. She needs to know how painful this is for us.”
Luke put on his jacket. “I love you, you know.”
Reid held out his hand and Luke grasped on. “I love you. That’s why our kid’s going to have a leg up then most. Let’s go.”
