“I can’t do this.”
Luke stayed frozen in place as Reid walked away - shoulders slumped in defeat - leaving behind a horribly Reid-less room.
What had just happened?
One minute Luke was telling Reid why he was at the bar instead of at the hospital by Noah’s bedside, and the next thing he knew, Reid was saying - in no uncertain terms - that he had feelings for him. Not in so many words, but his bold and honest “I’m not.” hardly left room for misinterpretation. The ball was, quite literally, in Luke’s court.
So why was he still sat on the same spot for, when everything he really wanted had just walked out of the door?
Your move, Snyder.
Luke’s struggling feet finally acted on the messages his cerebellum was transmitting and he hurried out the bar door, Reid’s name on his dry lips. He scoured the parking lot, oblivious to the chill in the late afternoon air, praying that he hadn't screwed this up for good before it even had the chance to start.
Luke caught some movement out the corner of his eye, and he turned around to find a familiar lone figure a couple of rows ahead about to enter a car. “Reid, wait!” He noticed Reid’s back stiffen for an only too brief moment at the sound of his voice. Luke kept striding on, heart beating wildly against his ribcage as Reid went through the motions of unlocking the car door on the driver’s side. He reached for Reid’s hand just as the telling click! of the lock sounded.
Reid’s hand shivered uncontrollably at Luke’s warm touch. The protest on the tip of Reid's tongue never made it past his lips, however, as Luke took his hand and brought it up to his own lips. For a second, Reid thought Luke was going to kiss it, but Luke just breathed out onto it, warming it. Luke repeated the action with Reid’s other hand, effectively bringing the doctor face to face with him, unguarded blue eyes finally connecting with determined brown ones.
Reid snatched his hand back, his voice hoarse. “Luke, please-"
Luke crashed his lips onto Reid’s, capturing his mouth in a brain-melting kiss, making no qualms about what- no, whom he wanted. Needed. He coerced Reid’s lips open and took his tongue prisoner, hands coming up to hold Reid’s head in place as he pressed them back against the car door. Luke felt the apprehension leave Reid’s body as he responded in kind, the kiss turning heady and passionate within a heartbeat. Reid’s hands found purchase in Luke’s hair, every touch of his long fingers sending a shudder right through the blonde’s body.
Their kisses became slower and shakier until the need for oxygen forced them apart, but not too far.
A dazed, if somewhat cross-eyed, Reid opened his eyes and swallowed hard at the intensity and the clarity he found in the bright, if somewhat darkened, brown eyes boring back into his.
Luke’s hand slid down to caress Reid’s cheek, his thumb brushing over the doctor’s kiss-swollen bottom lip.
“You once asked me how you make me feel,” Luke started, each word wrapped around a warm puff of air falling on Reid’s slightly parted lips. He took a deep, steadying breath. “You make me feel like I’m standing on the edge of a cliff,” Luke confessed in a whisper, his gaze solid and unwavering, though. “Yet, somehow, I've never felt safer in my entire life. I've never felt more at home.”
Reid closed his eyes on a sigh and rested his forehead against Luke’s. He knew it to be true, and not just because the words poured out of Luke like a healing balm to his wounded soul. He knew because he felt it in the way Luke touched him. In the way Luke looked at him. In the way Luke held him.
After weeks of confusion, hurt and ache, Reid finally allowed himself to fall all the way, safe in the knowledge that Luke would be there to catch him.
He was home.
