“It’s OK, little one,” Luke said as he entered the house. He toed his shoes off by the front door before heading for the bathroom. “Let’s get you cleaned up.”
The bundle of fur against his chest barked quietly in response. When Luke placed the puppy on the counter, her big brown eyes peered at him with the utmost curiosity. Luke noticed she had a brown collar with blue flowers on, with a little silver tag hanging from the front that read ‘Arya’.
Luke pet her softly, her long and light cream fur rough and dirty. “Arya. Is that your name?”
Judging by the blur that became her wagging tail and the excited sniffing at Luke’s hands, he figured that had to be her name. There was no address or anything else on the tag, and Luke tried to keep himself in check as the hope that maybe she could stay with him and Reid began to blossom.
Luke plugged the sink and turned on the warm water, letting it fill up about halfway. He chuckled when Arya jumped into the water, splashing him slightly in the process, before settling down and licking her own tiny brown nose.
Luke smiled. “You’re a beauty,” he said, before grabbing a bottle of body wash from the shelf unit.
Luke squeezed some onto his palm before reaching forward and rubbing it gently over her fur, while she pawed at the ever increasing soap suds. Luke rinsed her off, before draining the water and wrapping her up in a soft towel. He carefully picked Arya up and carried her to the living-room, her fur clean and soft to the touch now.
She let out a little arf! and, of course, that’s when Reid walked into the house.
“What was that?” Reid asked, closing the door behind him.
“A puppy,” Luke answered hesitantly.
Arya’s tiny, fluffy head popped out of the bath towel, long ears flopping down the side of her face as big, brown eyes blinked up
at the new arrival.
Reid made a face. “What is it doing here?”
Luke’s face fell. He knew convincing Reid was not going to be easy.
“She was found at the docks earlier today, alone and shivering. No one knows how she got there. But she’s a Miniature Dachshund,” Luke hurried on to say, “and they are a very intelligent breed, obedient by nature and easy to train. They make for excellent companions and watchdogs, too-“
“I know nothing about dogs, nor do I want one,” Reid interrupted as soon as Luke stopped to take a breath. “You should have talked to me first, before bringing one home.”
“I should have,” Luke agreed sheepishly. “But I just couldn’t leave her at the office in that state, you know? I brought her home and got her cleaned up.”
Reid rolled his eyes. Luke and his stupid, big heart. He was willing to bet his blonde fell in love with the puppy the moment he heard about it, without thinking things all the way through.
“We both have incredibly busy work schedules,” Reid reasoned, trying not to meet Luke’s hopeful eyes. “And dogs need companionship. They need to be potty-trained. They’re loud and smelly and they pee everywhere! I am not cleaning up after a puppy,” Reid huffed rather dramatically. “Neither of us would really have the time to take care of one, Luke.”
“Don’t worry about that,” Luke said earnestly. “The puppy can come to work with me - I’m the boss, after all. And I know all about Dachshunds. Grandma Emma had one at the farm when I was growing up. He was so cute and friendly. I’ll take care of the training, too. You won’t have to do a thing.”
Reid sighed heavily. He looked down at the little pup, no more than nine weeks old, snuffling the air towards him, and then back up at Luke - his persistent, passionate, incredibly sweet and caring Luke.
Two sets of puppy eyes kept glancing at him - one beseechingly, the other curiously - and then the dog lifted her tiny paw and gently scratched between her eyes. Reid lowered his shoulders. Doomed. He was doomed.
“My study is off-limits,” Reid warned the blonde. "And I want sex. Lots and lots of 'thank you' sex."
The doctor's heart skipped a beat as Luke beamed a beaming smile that lit up everything and everyone within reach.
