I've finally got to the stage with my teaching and spanish that the students are actually happy to have me as a lecturer, as opposed to annoyed at the foreigner who doesn't understand them properly.

Maybe the women are more active because they recognise you as someone who is supportive of women. I doubt you are ignoring, overlooking or patronising them like some lecturers I've had. Also, your body-language is kind of unassuming; you're more into your subject and communicating effectively than you are into being the alpha male
