Why does everyone think it`s funny to respond to "What`s up?" with "the ceiling" or "the sky"?

I do it mostly just to annoy the person asking! Although I only do it like once and a blue moon.

It's because no one can ever agree on the context in which that slang phrase is used. Some people use it as a question, you know, like grammar implies it to be; others use it as a replacement for "hi" and react oddly if you respond to it like a question.

I respond with a random object in the upward direction as a means to mock the use of slang to begin with. I know, I'm an ass. ;)
