I seriously wonder why I even bother with my own writing. uberscribbler June 15 2009, 12:19:56 UTC
With vision and attention to detail like this, you should seriously consider submitting the completed manuscript for publication. Seriously ( ... )

Well, Petra's managed to avoid the police for the time being. There aren't that many of them, really. (Modern cities often have about 3-4 officers per thousand people. Fleetsec is probably 3-4 times that because they also fulfill the role of EMS and firefighters and the national guard. But that's only about 5 officers on a ship of 300 people and 2 of them will probably have primarily non-law enforcement roles.)

Petra and Simon trying to make it on their own is a big subject of the next chapter. Ultimately what I'm going for here is something rather Dickensian.

As for publishing, I don't know if I could actually make it into an completely original work. Maybe this first section, where the OC's are on their own, but the ultimate resolutions are so tied to the BSG universe. I do think I might use the free offer I got from being in Nano to use one of the self-publishers to get a hardbound version of it, just for my own satisfaction. But I've got to get it completely edited before I can get to that point.

I'm really enjoying this story, and this chapter was very good. I think my favorite part was this:
Planets, they said, were round, like a ring ship. Would Earth be like this, always feeling like you were poised at the top of a very gradual hill? It hadn’t seemed that way in pictures, but it was hard to say.
I've always been fascinated by this idea of how children in the Fleet would think of a planet, so I really appreciated this.

Yeah, that whole issue is going to become a major theme of the story. The thing about writing OC's is that you watch the show and imagine what they'd do in that situation. Watching both Revelations and Daybreak with Petra in mind, the big question was: "What if this were all new, completely alien to everything you'd ever known? Would you find it wonderful? Terrifying?"
