Five Questions

alhandra asked some questions.

1) What is the thing you find the easiest about being in the military?

I always know what's expected of me. It's a lot easier to stay in (moderate) shape when I have to do physical training every morning; it's a lot easier to know how to dress when I'm handed a uniform. Everything has a rule, and a rule for every thing. Sometimes this is also what drives me crazy about the military, because I don't like the brain shut-off that happens on certain levels, but it is at least an orderly existence.

2) Would you share a happy memory from your grade school years?

Grade school, huh?

In fourth grade, our class put on a "musical" which consisted of two narrators talking about how they were going to the fair, then going offstage while each class sang a different song about some part of the fair. I got to be one of the narrators, and I remember going offstage and frantically memorizing my lines for each segment while the songs went on, and then going onstage and delivering them. And I had a blast. I remember I was wearing a navy blue sundress with little red flowers all over it. I wonder what happened to it.

Other memories that compete are the memory of my entire senior class getting together to buy my ticket to the prom, and lending me a dress, and giving me a ride in a classmate's limo, and giving me a corsage. I had a blast. Or maybe the first time I actually used my sense of humor around my classmates, sophomore year in high school, when someone looked out the window in homeroom and commented on the senior boys adding a layer of water on top of the ice on the pond so it would freeze smooth, and I told her to let the boys play with their hoses.

I haven't thought that much about the positive memories from school. I really should.

3) What kind of music appeals to you the most? Why?

You know, that's kind of a hard question to answer. To listen to, to play, or to sing? To listen to, I think I'd have to say electronica. Either electronica or world music; Cirque du Soleil has some of my favorite music, and it has influences from both. I like electronica because of the driving beat and the digitized quality, because it can take other influences and twist them. (It also suits my dance style.) To play, I tend to prefer classical or folk; primarily, I enjoy fugues or pieces with rippling accompaniment. I enjoy challenging myself, and the folk harp really lends itself to counterpoint. To sing, I prefer something with a rich harmony, which usually limits me to classical. I love singing in a good madrigal or fugue with nice tight harmony. If I'm singing by myself, I prefer something pure, simple, and haunting; my favorite Christmas carol is "I Wonder As I Wander." But give me another voice to play against and I'm always looking for a chance to break into harmony.

4) What is your all-time favorite video game?

Ask me in a few months? That's a hard one for me, because I play a lot. Games I've gone back to include: Legend of Mana, Diablo II, Legend of Zelda: Wind Waker. I like Morrowind and Atelier Iris, and I've enjoyed the Myst series, but I haven't finished the first two, and once I've solved the Myst series, it takes quite a while before I get interested in playing it again. Generally, I like puzzle games and I like roleplaying games. Put those together, especially with puzzles that aren't fiddly or so distinctive that it takes forever to forget the solution (cough, Riven on both counts, cough), and you have me hooked.

5) What play or musical would you be interested in being a part of? Backstage or on-stage?

Backstage, I think I'd like to be involved with The Lion King. The maskwork alone would be worth it. Onstage, I'm really not sure; I don't have the accent ability for Eliza in Pygmalion, Guendolyn in The Importance of Being Earnest doesn't have quite enough of a sense of humor, and I don't know Shakespeare well enough to be able to pick a specific play. I might enjoy playing Martha in The Secret Garden, though. I think I'd enjoy any part where I had a large enough role to actually stretch out in.
