I actually had this happen once at a Chili's. Luckily, I'm only mildly diabetic, so I just had a horrible insomnia attack over it.
Also, I'm not familiar with the South Beach Diet, but I should warn you about some of the low-carb diets: they actually put you in a state of malnutrition. You need a minimum of 45 grams of carbs per day to keep your brain functioning. 60 is better.
The South Beach Diet was actually designed by a cardiologist. The first two to three weeks is "phase 1," which is the only part where I actually need to completely avoid high glycemic index foods -- the idea is to break insulin resistance. Then I start slowly adding whole grains and occasional fruits back into my diet. So it's not a long-term choice. But thanks for the warning!
