For those wanting to know more about the recent DDoS attacks, yes, it looks like it was the Russian government trying to shut down the dissidents again.

As I said last time, while it's frustrating not to have access, LJ is a lot more than a social network platform. From the article:

"from defending the rights of political prisoners to saving endangered historic architecture in Moscow"

Uhm. Maybe I am not friending the right people, but I have read nothing about endangered historic architecture in Moscow.

Whatever. You pull a DDOS attack against a neutral party, you deserve harsh punishment, be you government or individual.

A lot of people are very wound up about Dreamwidth being America-based... But the thing that I keep thinking about is that a number of my LJ flist are not from the U.S. Why would they care that DW is based in America? They would care about server stability, etc. But really we are becoming more global; and it does not bother people to blog on a server that is not hosted in the U.S.

It kills me that people think that the US has better internet than other countries. Korea and Japan can blow us out of the water. And as far as privacy is concerned, people forget about the PATRIOT Act and all of the secret surveillance going on. There are other countries with stricter laws that protect internet privacy (though Russia isn't one of them).

The only reason for me to hop over to DW is that that is where my friends have gone. It does seem pretty stable.

LJ may be owned by a Russian company, but they use a data center in Montana.

My thoughts are this: it wasn't the DDoS'es, but LJ admins' lack of proper response and general ineptitude, every single time this happens.

The admins at DW are remarkably quick to address a problem, and they give proper updates...something that LJ has never done. The LJ status page, which is hosted on a different network, was 2 days old during the height of LJ being inaccessible.
