Longtime readers of this journal know about my sweet kitty friend Tikka. I rescued him from a shelter in Longview, WA. He was found wandering the streets, and no one claimed him. He is a gorgeous Bengal cat, probably worth at least $800. But someone had four-paw declawed him ( Read more... )

Aw, poor baby! I agree with you completely, not surprisingly. Penny was front de-clawed before she came to us. It breaks my heart to watch her paw at the scratching post. But she has coped very well and manages to catch the shoestring we play with amazingly well.

Cats are nothing if not adaptable. Still, it is heartbreaking that they have to cope with stupid humans. Penny is a lovely girl!

She is my baby. I worry now that she's getting older (and I have no idea how old she is) but will appreciate her everyday that she's with me.

Could I use an edited version of this along with a picture of Tikka for my students to read, please? It's really well written and very educational. <3

It should be illegal.

When I was under a year old, my parent's cat had to be put to sleep. The vet approached them under the table about a year old tabby he couldn't bring himself to kill. her humans had had her forepaws declawed. They then decided she was too much trouble and they ordered him to kill her even though she was healthy and loved people. They took her home. She was incredibly patient with me as a toddler and lived to be eighteen. She was an excellent mouser until the arthritis got her. She was terribly lucky she had her hind claws still, even luckier to be rescued. Every time I think of her poor mutilated claws I get very anfry at her first humans.

Indeed they are! I have two other fully clawed kitties, and none of them attack the furniture. They have plenty of scratching posts. Oddly enough. Tikka is the one I see using the posts most often.
