The book I'm reading

I'm still on the Shadow of the Wind and for the most part I'm enjoying it but there was one thing that really bothered me. It didn't bother me enough to put the book down but it did bother me. In the story a character who is sober and does not have a gun to their head chooses to read Tess of the D'Urbervilles and even worse, is happy about it.
