Breakfast at the Globe Hotel B&B included fabulous pumpkin muffins. Jeanette's spread was simpler than some of the other places we breakfasted, but was plentiful and good. We set out on our bicycles in good spirits, knowing that Karen and Gene were getting a rental car and heading to St. Charles to Rhona's fabulous care at Lococo House.
Day 5 was the day of flat tires. As I later told Elin, every time on this ride that she felt old and slow, it was really a sign that her tire was flat. Between Elin and me, we had 4 flat tires on day 5. Actually, I only had one, after recounting the saga of Elin's flats to Ann. The timing was quite ironic. Also, I had loaned my spare to Elin, since she had a flat and had already used her spare, but Elin was unused to using a CO2 cartridge and actually exploded my inner tube. The sound was fantastic; I thought some one had shot at us. That inner tube had a 3 inch gash in it so it was completely unusable but luckily we were able to patch my flat inner tube and it held (is still holding, actually).
Because of the delays, we had to rather book to reach Rendleman's B&B in time for breakfast. There not many exciting scenes on this day, anyway, though we did see a rock that had been marked to indicate flood levels for the past 100 years, and at the base of that rock, I saw a very small skink with a beautiful iridescent tail.
Doug, our host at the B&B, had a fabulous dinner for us with chicken, fresh beans and snow peas, cole slaw, and potatoes au gratin. The food was delicious and plentiful, which was good because the accommodations were merely adequate. Worst of all, for me, was that Doug left his one dog in the house and was not present when said dog became very upset during a thunderstorm, robbing me of about 2 hours of sleep I desperately needed. My door would not quite latch securely enough and the dog kept coming in to the room and clawing me. I felt bad for the dog, who was a bit freaked out, but mostly annoyed with Doug because the dog clearly did not want me but would not let me sleep. so on the whole, I would not recommend this B&B, though Doug was quite nice and the food was delicious.
