While the results of this USC study on Oscar-nominated films are not exactly surprising, the numbers are pretty disheartening. Of films nominated for Academy Awards between 2007 and 2010:
  • Only 32.6 percent of speaking characters were female
  • Only 14.3 percent of directors were female
  • Of the speaking characters analyzed for race, 78 percent were white

That was shocking and depressing. I was especially surprised by latino actors having less than 2% of speaking parts! To be honest, the 32% rate for women disappointed me a little too. I knew it wasn't 50/50 but ...

I find this kind of thing endlessly interesting, so thanks for pointing it out.

Isn't that awful! I mean, for how much of the US (and Hollywood/LA) population Latinos make up, it is pretty unbelievable they are still only written 2% of speaking parts. But then, as you say, 32% for women isn't great either. Ugg.

right? right. and this is not even to start talking about the substance of the roles those characters are given, in their tiny percentages of the whole. grrrr.
