Surrounded by the notion of insubstantial explanation

I'm currently completely swamped by marking first year essays. The subject of this post is an indicator of the type of language I'm underlining and annotating with a great big CLARIFY every third paragraph or so. Do people think I can't distinguish between words that actually mean something and words that are just taking up space on the page?
