Ahhhhhhaha! This shouldn't make me laugh as much as I do, but it does.
Great little story you may be the only one who appreciates: last week Will and I had to spend a day in Rockville to get a mattress. Will is very anti-suburbs because they all look the same, the people are all the same, etc. We ended up at a TGI Friday's happy hour to wait out traffic, and the crowd of people in there was the most racially diverse either of us had ever seen in this area -- far moreso than anywhere here in the city. I've been staying mostly in the city for so long now, where there's a huge racial divide almost everywhere you go, that I had forgotten how mixing bowl everything is out in the burbs. It was beautiful. It occurs to me that I can't think of too many American cities where it is actually as diverse inside the city limits as it is out. Economic factors, of course, but such a harrowing thought that it is actually things like Rockville Pike that are even moreso the great equalizer than the DC DMVs are.

it's so true, but i think that only applies in some places. actually, though, i do feel like the suburbs of d.c. are fairly mixing bowl like that. i'm sure most of the white people can't stand it, but whatever. works for me.
