so, there are two XNA video-game-making programs at UNM; one in Fine Arts, and the other in Engineering. There's no overlap between the two, and they seem to barely even know each other exist. ha! though i think i'm slightly offended by the implication that serious games are inherently pretentious... writing games for educational contexts falls solidly in the category of "building cool stuff" for me.

Oregon Trail & Carmen Sandiego kind of prove to me that educational doesn't mean it can't be fun. Too bad I haven't seen anything on par with those since.

there are a lot of them out there, but sadly they mostly get used within schools / universities instead of making it into the wider market.

You're totally on the ball there. There are far too few "fine arts" people I know who believe that you should enjoy their art. A sense of fun is really missing.
