Start with your base, sharpened.


Duplicate the base twice. Set the first to soft light and desaturate it. Set the second to screen and desaturate that.
On the second duplicate, lower the desaturate to 50%.


Dark blue layer to 100% exclusion.

Set this (#FF5B45) to multiply 40%.

Using #B20000, click on the fill/adjustment layer icon at the bottom of the layers window, the one that looks like a circle that's half white, half black. Then click on "gradient" in the list that comes up.


Those are the setting I used. You can play around and find something to suit your icon.
Then set this to lighten 100%.


And that is all. You can add text if you like, I did at first, but I didn't like it, so I left it out.
