Six Months

1:00 pm Ministry of Magic: Department of International Affairs: Office of Hermione Granger

Hermione sighed and gently laid her head down on her desk. More than likely, that action smudging the fresh ink on her papers. Her head was throbbing and there was nothing that would help at this point. She had taken all her pepper-up and any other potions she had would make her too drowsy to finish the final proof of her proposal on magical creatures in international dealings.

Nope, she was stuck with the pounding in her head.

Picking her head back up, she squeezed her eyes shut and opened them again in a vain attempt to continue. At that moment, she also noticed her boss standing in the door, causing her to jump a bit in her chair.

Trying to look unfazed, she spoke over the fresh adrenaline pumping through her heart.

"Yes, sir? How can I help you?" she said cheerfully. He rolled his eyes.

"By helping yourself, Hermione."

"Sorry?"

"Oh, please. You look like you haven't slept in a week and you missed me walking into your office because you were dozing on your report!" At that last, Hermione huffed indignantly.

"I most certainly wasn't dozing! I was simply giving my eyes a break!" Roger sighed. He wasn't going to win with this woman, he knew that.

"Hermione, I know how much this project means to you -" she tried to interject her passion on the subject, "yes, I've heard. Let me put it to you this way: if you don't go home and get some sleep, this project is going to suffer. I need you on top of your game when you present this. Please put it away for today - yes, I know it's only one in the afternoon - and go home. You have so much vacation saved up it's ridiculous."

Hermione sighed for the umpteenth time today. He was right, really, when he put it that way. She didn't want her project to suffer due to her lack of coherence.

"Ok," she said reluctantly, "I really want this paper to be accepted by the committee at large and I don't want my performance to suffer due to lack of attention."

"Excellent choice, Ms. Granger." he smiled. "I'll see you tomorrow morning."

Hermione pressed the heels of her hands to her eyes, trying to push away the pressure she felt building there. She really did need sleep. Draco was supposed to be picking her up from work tonight to celebrate six months of seeing each other.

That thought made her smile. She still couldn't believe the past six months. They seemed so surreal to her, especially since she was so fatigued causing slight delirium. He was supposed to pick her up from work. She would owl him when she got home.

She shut and locked her door and put away her papers. She enjoyed her private floo connection from her office. Once home, she settled on a nice bath, followed by a nap. Lovely, that would be. She started the water, adding some lavender. It was filled by the time she returned with a soft robe and slippers. Just what the doctor (or her boss, really) had prescribed.

Within minutes, she was completely relaxed. Once she finished with her bath and drained the water, she was asleep in minutes.

5:07 pm Ministry of Magic: Department of International Affairs: Outside Hermione Granger's Office

"What do you mean you don't know where she is?!"

"Sir, I'm sorry. I haven't seen her since I left for my lunch break." the receptionist was just about in tears. She hadn't thought anything of Ms. Granger's closed door when she came back from lunch. She had a major report to present in three days. This was typical behavior for her. This man, however, seemed to think she was in danger.

"Don't you check on her? Do you even know how to do your job?"

"This is normal behavior for her! She has a report due and she -"

"I know about her report! That doesn't explain why she isn't in her office!"

"EXCUSE ME! Woah, woah!" the noise had escalated enough to draw just about everyone's attention including Roger Clemmons, the head of the department. "Sir, exactly what do you think you're doing?"

"I'm looking for Hermione Granger who, according to this completely incompetent bint you call a receptionist, is currently missing."

"Young man," he replied with a voice of venom, "I find your behavior appalling. I'm sure you didn't expect to come into my office and degrade my very competent employees and still have me tell you the whereabouts of Ms. Granger, did you? I can assure you that whatever business you may have with her, she wouldn't associate herself with someone such as yourself. Please excuse yourself from this office."

To his surprise, the man's bravado crumpled instantly. His voice was dull when he spoke next.

"You're correct, sir. She shouldn't associate herself with someone such as me. Please excuse my behavior, it was very unprofessional of me." and he turned to walk out of the office.

"Excuse me," Roger called after the man's back, "son, come back here." He turned and walked back, standing now-demurely in front of Hermione's boss. "Listen here, why are you looking for her, all guns blazing when you couldn't find her?"

"My name is Draco Malfoy, sir, and I'm here to pick her up for a date. Today we've been together for six months."

8:00 pm Bella Notte: Reserved section: Table of Draco Malfoy and Hermione Granger

"Listen, Draco. I understand why you did it. I actually think it's cute. I mean, well, after being appalled that you said those things to my assistant and my boss, of all people."

"I know, I know. I'm so sorry. I'm just not good at being in a relationship. After all we've been through and how much I've seen you get hurt, the thought of you missing is terrifying. I'm trying though."

"I know, Draco, I know. And we'll get through this. We've made it six months so far, yeah?" she smiled.

7:00 am Hermione Granger's home: Master bedroom: Bed

Hermione smiled to herself in the morning sunlight. If you would've told her a year and a half ago she'd be waking up next to Draco Malfoy, she would've laughed and told you, in a logical and progressively prioritized manner, why that's ridiculous.

But this morning, she wouldn't want it any other way. They both have their scars that run deep from the war. The fighting, the torture, the pain. But together, they're helping each other heal.

Together, they're seeing each other through.
