I've been thinking about what I have been missing about the classic Supernatural episodes in the new season, and I think I finally put a finger on it

I totally get what you're saying and completely agree. I've kinda felt like this ever since season 4. I miss when it was "saving people, hunting things." I've always phrased it as saying that it got too big too quickly. They went from not even knowing that rocksalt shot at ghosts would work to angels and demons and God and The Devil.
I'm enjoying this season a LOT more than last, but when I watch, I have to look at it as almost a completely separate show than S1-3 for me to enjoy it haha...that's probably not good. :-\
I agree. :( I'm hoping they don't involve the entirety of this season around Sam getting his soul back. I hope he gets it back, Grandpa dies, and we can has going back to cases. :(
But like you said, I'm enjoying the season so far. Just... in a way that I enjoy talking to an old friend after five years. They're still the same in essence, but they're also so different. :\
This got me thinking of the eepisodes so far this season (ignoring the first because it had to bridge the gap of time). So in 6.02 they are in the grocery and have to interact, that was fairly normal. But in 6.03 they leave a damaged car (that has to be registered to someone) sitting by a damaged hotel room where a kidnapped boy is lying on the bed! That at least had to compromise their fake ID. So yes, I think the interaction is less because they are trying to accomplish so much. I think the 40 minutes they get to tell the story just isn't long enough.
