Summary: An early morning with a new family member
***
Two women lay silently-one with flowing silvery tresses, the other with cropped bright, bubble-gum pink hair-curled close to each other upon the bed. A duvet clung to the corner of the mattress, most of its purple fabric in a pool on the floor. Lavender-coloured sheets bunched and tangled between the two of them so only their breasts remain covered, the rest of their bodies exposed to the chill of the room. Tonks yawned, tightening her hold on Luna, who snuggled further into her embrace.
Luna roused several hours later with the first rosy fingers of dawn slipping between the curtains. She wiped the sleep from her eyes and gazed at Tonks’s freckled hand on her bare stomach and smiled sweetly-how she loved waking with her lover ensconced in a cocoon of warmth. It always made her feel safe, loved. A faint squeaking sound pricked her hearing, and she wondered what sort of creature had made it.
‘Luna, it’s too early to go hunting for wee beasties,’ Tonks groused sleepily, nuzzling her pillow, then fell silent once more.
Luna grinned, straining her ears towards the urgent, plaintive noise, but still very soft, and further away than the balcony outside their bedroom window. She looked at Tonks who had pulled her knees to her chest in an attempt to warm herself; it clearly hadn’t worked, as gooseflesh appeared on her legs and arms. Luna covered Tonks with the sheet, then grabbed the duvet and wrapped it around herself to traipse through the flat in search of the noise. It hadn’t taken more than a few minutes when she found herself at the front door, staring at the tiniest, fluffiest grey-and-white kitten, whose fur stuck out in all directions-it reminded her a bit of Harry, if she were honest. She bent to pick it up, and the little cat jumped into her arms, promptly snuggling in the crook of her neck to purr in her ear.
‘You sure are persistent, little one,’ Luna said sweetly, stroking the kitten as she made her way to the kitchen to find a saucer. ‘You need to eat something, don’t you?’
Having an affinity with animals served her well-she could communicate with any species, even if only in gestures. They understood each other on a very basic, primal level. The kitten bumped her chin with its head, as if to affirm her query.
‘We don’t have much in the way of food at the moment. Will a nibblet of tuna suffice?’
The kitten tilted its head at her in curiosity, clearly not knowing what tuna was. It gave a flick of its pink, fuzzy ears when a loud thud came from somewhere within the flat. Tonks yelped in pain and gave a creative curse.
‘Geez! Must I always trip over my own feet?’ Tonks walked into the kitchen, a wince upon her face, wearing nothing more than a pair of bunny slippers and a bright red welt on her knee.
Luna turned from her search for the lone tin of tuna in the cupboard to ogle her lover, asking, ‘What did you fall into now, Dora?’
‘One of the dresser knobs. I swear we need to baby-proof the flat.’ A faint blush coloured her cheeks.
Luna and Tonks laughed, and the kitten hopped off her shoulder and onto the floor, going over to Tonks to sniff at her toes. ‘Perhaps kitten-proofing would be apposite.’ She knew that would get a grin from her Dora, kitten was her pet-name, after all.
‘Who’s this, then?’ Tonks looked down at the kitten who was nudging her toes with its cold, pink nose. She giggled when it nibbled her.
‘It hasn’t revealed its name, yet.’ Luna drained the excess liquid from the tin and gave the bottom a tap to dump a portion of the contents onto the saucer.
Tonks took the saucer and placed it upon the table and waited for the cat to join her. It stared up at her, its expression clearly saying, ‘What, you expect me to jump that height when I’m just a wee cat?’ It meowed, and she bent to pick it up and set it on the table with her and Luna. ‘Lazy already, are you?’ The kitten gave a brisk ‘mew’. Clearly a ‘no’, then.
‘You must be related to Minerva.’ It gave her a harsh glare and set about to paw at the tuna on the plate.
‘I think it’s time we get acquainted with our new family member.’ Luna stood behind Tonks and leaned over to press a kiss to her violet-scented hair.
‘I’ll have yet another thing to try not to fall over,’ Tonks said with mock irritation.
‘Well, you can fall over me anytime.’ Luna smirked, playfully pinching Tonks’s dusky nipples, making her squeal.
