Giselle regarded the filthy uniform, skew-whiff wig, the empty bottle before him. Deserter, she guessed. Tortuga always attracted the Navy‘s cast-offs.
He rose, swaying, as she approached. Haunted green eyes met, held hers; reading despair, her painted smile faltered.
“You‘re new hereabouts……?”
“James,” he provided, bowing. Beautiful voice… lovely manners.
“Navy?”
Pain flickered. “Not anymore. I’m currently shipless, homeless, rootless…”
Pressing closer, her palm slid down, slyly. “Rootless?” She smiled. “Not by my measure!“
“Also, regrettably, penniless…”
“Tonight, for you… Gratis…” Fancy Latin word, that… learned from Jack. “Me bed needs warming.“ A soft kiss. “And you need a friend…”
