James wasn't certain how long he'd been clinging to the capsized longboat. It might've been mere hours, but seemed like days. His nails¾ always fastidiously well-manicured¾ lay jagged and torn in splinter-ravaged fingertips, sacrificed in his bloody struggle to prevent relentless, hurricane-driven waves from sweeping him away.
Now, as stormclouds dissipated and weak daylight filtered down upon the drifting ruins of the once-noble Dauntless, and the remains of those brave, loyal men whom he'd foolishly led to perdition in his obsession to capture one elusive Sparrow, he questioned why he'd fought so determinedly for survival.
He now wished he hadn't.
